성녀 마르가리타 클리테로우(Saint Margaret Clitherow)는 영국 부유한 부모님에게서 태어났다.

Saint Margaret Clitherow was born to wealthy parents in England. 

 

그녀가 14살 때 존경받는 사업가이었던 아버지가 사망했고 그녀는 도시의 징수관으로 있는 남편과 결혼하여 세 명의 자녀를 낳았다.

When she was 14, her father, a respected businessman, died, and she married her husband, a city collector, and had three children. 

 

결혼하고 3년이 지난 그녀는 가톨릭으로 개종했다. 그러나 그녀는 프로테스탄트 예배에 불참했다는 이유로 2년 동안이나 투옥되었다.

Three years after her marriage, she converted to Catholicism. However, she was imprisoned for two years for failing to attend Protestant services. 

 

석방된 후 그녀는 그전보다 더욱 용감하게 행동했다. 그녀는 어린이들을 위한 가톨릭 학교를 세우고 자기 집이나 혹은 빌린 집의 방을 제공해 박해 중임에도 사제가 미사를 거행할 수 있도록 했다.

After her release, she acted more courageously than before. She established Catholic schools for children and provided rooms in her own or rented homes so that priests could celebrate Mass despite the persecution. 

 

그녀는 집안에 보관 중이던 미사 도구가 발각되면서 가톨릭 사제들의 은신처로 사용되었음이 밝혀져 유죄 판결을 받았다.

She was found guilty after the mass equipment stored in her house was discovered and it was revealed that it had been used as a hiding place for Catholic priests. 

 

그녀는 죽을 때까지 온몸을 눌러 으스러뜨리는 모진 고문을 받고 순교하였다.

She was martyred after being subjected to harsh torture that crushed her entire body until she died.
