성 아모스(Saint Amos)는 정의의 예언자로서 예언-집필 문학 시대를 연 이스라엘 최초의 예언자였다.

Saint Amos was a prophet of justice and the first prophet of Israel who ushered in the era of prophecy-writing literature. 

 

아모스(Amos)의 의미는 ‘짐, 부담’을 뜻한다.

The meaning of Amos is ‘burden, burden.’ 

 

그는 예루살렘(Jerusalem)으로부터 멀리 떨어진 작은 촌락에서 태어났다. 그는 자신을 다음과 같이 소개하였다. “나는 그저 가축을 키우고 돌무화과나무를 가꾸는 사람입니다.”

He was born in a small village far from Jerusalem. He introduced himself as follows: “I am just a person who raises livestock and tends to sycamore trees.” 

 

그는 정치, 문화, 농업이 상호 긴밀히 연계되어 있던 지역 출신으로서, 보다 넓은 시야를 갖출 수 있었을 뿐만 아니라 전원 세계에서 터득한 언어를 어려움 없이 구사할 수 있었다.

Coming from an area where politics, culture, and agriculture were closely interconnected, he not only had a broader perspective, but was also able to speak the language he had learned in the rural world without difficulty. 

 

그가 활동할 때는 고통스러운 시기였다. 정치적으로 과거의 영토를 상당 부분 회복함으로써 승리에 도취되었고, 경제적으로는 인접 국가들과의 교역이 확대되어 괄목할 정도로 부가 증가하였지만, 이는 오히려 빈부의 사회적 불균형을 가중시켰다.

It was a painful time when he was active. Politically, the country was intoxicated with victory by recovering a significant portion of its former territory, and economically, trade with neighboring countries expanded and wealth increased significantly, but this actually aggravated the social imbalance between the rich and the poor. 

 

부자들의 사치와 착취가 사법권을 등에 업고 조직적으로 행해졌다. 그리고 법과 정의를 존중하고 실천하려는 의지 없이 형식적이고 위선적인 예식이 성행하였다.

Luxury and exploitation of the rich were systematically carried out with the back of judicial power. And formal and hypocritical ceremonies were prevalent without the will to respect and practice law and justice. 

 

이에 그는 나라의 멸망을 예감하고 그들을 바로잡으려 애썼다. 그는 이와 같은 상황을 꾸짖고 하느님과 맺은 계약을 실천해야 주님의 날에 보호를 받을 수 있다고 주장했다.

Accordingly, he foresaw the destruction of the country and tried to correct them. He rebuked this situation and argued that only by living up to the covenant with God would one be protected on the Day of the Lord. 

 

당시 사람들은 하느님께서 자신들에게 복만 주실 거라 생각했다. 하지만 그는 세상 만민이 하느님 눈에 다 똑같다고 선언하며 오히려 하느님과 계약 관계에 있는 이스라엘이 죄의 대가를 더 비싸게 치를 거라고 경고하였다.

At that time, people thought that God would only bless them. However, he declared that all people in the world are the same in the eyes of God and warned that Israel, which is in a covenant relationship with God, would pay a higher price for its sins.
