성 요한 페인(Saint John Payne)은 영국에서 프로테스탄트(개신교) 부모의 아들로 태어났다.

Saint John Payne was born in England as the son of Protestant parents. 

 

그는 성장한 후 가톨릭으로 개종했고 비교적 많은 나이에도 불구하고 신학을 공부하기 위해 대학에 들어갔다.

He converted to Catholicism when he grew up and, despite his relatively old age, entered university to study theology. 

 

1576년 4월 7일 사제품을 받은 그는 바로 영국 선교를 위한 여정에 올랐다. 그는 도착하고 얼마 지나지 않아 프로테스탄트(개신교)가 된 이를 다시 가톨릭으로 돌아오도록 했다.

After being ordained a priest on April 7, 1576, he immediately set out on a missionary journey to England. Shortly after his arrival, he had someone who had become a Protestant return to Catholicism. 

 

그는 1577년 체포되어 감옥에 갇혔다가 곧 풀려났다. 이후 그는 밀고자의 신고로 또 체포되었다. 그는 심문을 받은 후 런던탑으로 이송되었다.

He was arrested and imprisoned in 1577, but was soon released. Afterwards, he was arrested again after being reported by a snitch. He was interrogated and then taken to the Tower of London. 

 

그는 여러 차례의 심문과 재판을 받았고 반역죄로 기소되었다. 그는 여왕과 주요 관리들을 죽이고 스코틀랜드의 여왕 메리를 왕으로 만들려 했다는 혐의를 받았다.

He was interrogated and tried several times and was charged with treason. He was accused of plotting to kill the queen and key officials and make Mary, Queen of Scots, king. 

 

거짓 음모였지만 결국 그는 처형 장소로 끌려가 순교하였다.

It was a false plot, but he was eventually dragged to the execution site and martyred.
