성녀 로사 베네리니(Saint Rose Venerini)는 1656년 2월 9일 이탈리아에서 태어났다.

Saint Rose Venerini was born in Italy on February 9, 1656. 

 

그녀는 태어나면서부터 총명함과 비범한 감성을 갖고 있었다. 그녀는 가정교육을 통해 확고한 그리스도교적 원칙 안에서 형성된 많은 심리적인 재능을 개발할 수 있었다.

She was born with intelligence and extraordinary sensitivity. Her home education enabled her to develop many psychological talents formed within solid Christian principles. 

 

청소년기 동안 그녀는 세상의 매력과 하느님께 드린 약속 사이에서 고민하며 지냈는데, 이 위기를 의심 없는 기도와 금욕으로써 이겨냈다.

During her youth she was torn between the charms of the world and her promises to God, a crisis she overcame through unquestioning prayer and abstinence. 

 

그녀는 자신의 미래에 대한 의문을 갖게 되었다. 그녀가 살던 시대에 여성들의 삶은 결혼 아니면 수도생활이라는 두 가지 방향의 선택만이 가능할 뿐이었다.

She began to question her future. In the era in which she lived, women had only two choices: marriage or monastic life. 

 

그녀는 이 두 가지 모두를 존중했지만, 하느님께서는 교회의 유익과 당시 사회를 위해 다른 계획을 깨닫도록 그녀를 부르셨다.

She respected both, but God called her to realize a different plan for the good of the Church and the society of her time. 

 

그녀는 아버지의 조언에 따라 자신의 서원을 완성하리라는 기대를 갖고 도미니코회 수녀원에 입회하였다.

Following her father's advice, she entered a Dominican convent with the expectation of completing her vows. 

 

그녀는 이모에게서 침묵과 묵상 중에 하느님의 말씀을 듣는 방법을 배웠다. 하지만 그녀의 수도원 생활은 그리 오래가지 못했다. 갑작스런 아버지의 죽음으로 인해 고통 중에 있는 어머니를 위로하기 위해 입회 몇 달 만에 집으로 돌아올 수밖에 없었다.

From her aunt, she learned how to listen to God in silence and meditation. But her monastic life did not last long. Due to the sudden death of his father, he had no choice but to return home a few months after joining to comfort his mother, who was suffering. 

 

그리고 다음 해에는 가족에게 주어진 불행의 짐을 짊어지게 되었다. 그녀의 오빠가 27살이라는 젊은 나이에 죽고 그로부터 몇 달 뒤에 어머니 또한 세상을 떠나고 말았다. 

And in the following year, he had to bear the burden of misfortune given to his family. Her older brother died at the young age of 27, and a few months later, her mother also passed away. 

 

하느님을 위해 뭔가 큰일을 하고 싶었던 그녀는 1684년 5월에 주변의 처녀와 부인들을 모아 저녁마다 묵주기도를 바치기 시작했다.

She wanted to do something great for God, so in May 1684, she gathered the virgins and women around her and began to pray the Rosary every evening. 

 

그녀는 기도 전후의 대화를 통해 하느님께서 젊은 여성들의 교육과 그리스도교적 양성이라는 보다 높은 사명을 위해 자신을 부르고 계심을 이해했고 학교에서 현실적이고 참된 감각을 갖고 투신해야 할 긴급한 필요성을 확인하였다.

Through conversations before and after prayer, she understood that God was calling her to a higher mission of education and Christian formation of young women, and she identified the urgent need to commit herself to schools with a realistic and authentic sense. 

 

그녀는 두 명의 친구이자 협력자와 함께 혁신적인 계획을 따라 기도 안에서 성숙하며 하느님의 뜻을 찾을 수 있는 첫 번째 여학교를 시작하였다.

Together with two friends and collaborators, she followed an innovative plan and started the first girls' school where women could mature in prayer and seek God's will. 

 

그녀의 첫 번째 목적은 소녀들을 그리스도교적 정신으로 양성하고 사회생활을 준비하도록 도와주는 것이었다. 물론 첫 시작이 쉽지는 않았다.

Her first goal was to educate girls in a Christian spirit and help them prepare for social life. Of course, the beginning was not easy. 

 

그러나 그녀는 하느님의 사랑을 위해 이 모든 것을 극복하며 자신이 하느님의 계획을 올바로 따르고 있다는 사실이 확실해질 때까지 주어진 길을 계속 걸어갔다. 그리고 그녀가 옳았다는 것은 교육사업의 결과로써 입증되었다.

But for the love of God, she overcame all this and continued on the path she had been given until it became clear that she was following God's plan correctly. And the results of the educational project proved that she was right. 

 

한편 교사들의 훈련과 학교들을 조직할 기구의 필요성을 느낀 그녀는 추기경의 도움과 성녀 루치아 필립피니(Saint Lucia Filippini)를 만나 ‘베네리니의 자매회(Venerini sisters)’를 공동으로 설립하였다.

Meanwhile, she felt the need for an organization to train teachers and organize schools, and with the help of a cardinal, she met Saint Lucia Filippini and jointly founded the ‘Venerini sisters.’ 

 

1716년 10월 24일 교황 클레멘스 11세(Clemens XI)는 8명의 추기경을 동반하고 그녀가 설립한 학교를 시찰하기 위해 방문하여 “당신은 우리가 할 수 없는 일을 하고 있습니다. 로마에 행복을 가져다 줄 이 학교에 대해 너무도 고맙습니다.”라며 치하하였다.

On October 24, 1716, Pope Clement XI, accompanied by eight cardinals, visited the school she founded to inspect it. “You are doing what we cannot do,” the Pope said. “I am so grateful for this school that will bring happiness to Rome,” he said. 

 

이를 계기로 여러 지역의 당국자와 추기경들로부터 자신들의 지역에 학교를 세워달라는 요청이 쇄도하였다.

This led to a flood of requests from authorities and cardinals in various regions to build schools in their regions.  

 

그녀는 1728년 5월 7일 로마에서 선종하였다.

She died in Rome on May 7, 1728.
