성 제오르지오 프레카(Saint George Preca)는 1880년 2월 12일 지중해 중앙에 위치한 몰타(Malta)에서 태어났다.

Saint George Preca was born on February 12, 1880 in Malta, located in the central Mediterranean. 

 

신심 깊은 부모에 의해 그는 태어난 해에 세례성사를 받았다. 17살이 된 어느 날 그는 에르콜레 몸팔라오(Ercole Mompalao) 신부를 만났다.

He was baptized by his devout parents the year he was born. One day, when he was 17, he met Father Ercole Mompalao. 

 

신부는 그에게 “네가 어른이 되면 하느님을 사랑하는 사람들이 너의 친구가 되고, 너도 그들의 친구가 될 것이다. 너는 그들을 통해 너의 좋은 운명을 찾을 것이고, 그들도 너를 통해서 그렇게 될 것이다.”라고 말했다.

The priest said to him, “When you grow up, those who love God will be your friends, and you will be their friends. “You will find your good destiny through them, and they will do the same through you.” 

 

그는 사제 서품을 몇 달 앞두고 매우 심각한 병에 걸려 거의 죽을 뻔했다. 그는 살아났지만 그 질병의 결과로 왼쪽 허파가 영구적으로 손상되었다.

A few months before his ordination, he became seriously ill and almost died. He survived, but his left lung was permanently damaged as a result of the disease. 

 

서품식 이후 여러 주간 동안 그는 미사를 봉헌할 때를 제외하고는 집밖으로 나가지 않았다. 그는 작은 다락방에 칩거하여 하루 종일 묵상 생활에 전념하였다.

For several weeks after his ordination, he did not leave the house except to say mass. He stayed in a small attic and devoted himself to meditation all day. 

 

그는 평신도 모임을 시작했는데 회원들은 모범적 생활과 가톨릭 신앙의 원리로 충실히 양성되어 사람들에게 신앙을 가르치기 위해 파견되었다.

He started a congregation of laymen whose members were faithfully trained in exemplary life and the principles of the Catholic faith and sent out to teach the faith to others. 

 

이 평신도 모임이 시간이 흐르면서 그리스도교 교리회(the Society of Christian Doctrine)로 발전하였다. 이 평신도 모임은 자신들을 단순한 복음적 생활양식으로 인도했고, 그들 스스로 짧은 기도나 규칙적인 묵상을 통해 기도 생활에 전념했다.

Over time, this lay group developed into the Society of Christian Doctrine. This group of laymen led themselves to a simple evangelical lifestyle and devoted themselves to a life of prayer through short prayers and regular meditation. 

 

1909년 그는 이 모임을 금지하는 명령을 받았다. 그는 상심하였지만 주저함 없이 이 명령을 따랐다. 그 후 교구 사제들이 자발적으로 교구청에 이의를 제기해 이 금령은 폐지되었다. 그러나 이것이 끝이 아니었다.

In 1909 he received an order banning these gatherings. Although he was heartbroken, he followed this command without hesitation. Afterwards, the priests of the diocese voluntarily appealed to the diocese and the ban was repealed. But this wasn't the end. 

 

그는 회원들에게 장난삼아 그들을 괴롭히는 사람까지도 기꺼이 용서하도록 요청하였다. 그리고 모욕까지 사랑하도록 가르치며 모든 고통을 참아내었다.

He asked members to be willing to forgive even those who harass them for fun. And he taught me to love even the insults and endured all the pain. 

 

그는 복음의 가치와 가르침을 전파하기 위해 쉬지 않고 노력했다. 사람들은 그에게 조언이나 격려의 말씀을 듣고자 몰려왔고 그의 전구로 이루어진 치유에 대해서도 이야기하였다.

He worked tirelessly to spread the values ​​and teachings of the gospel. People flocked to him to hear advice and words of encouragement and to tell of the healings that had come about through his intercession. 

 

사실 그는 하느님으로부터 많은 초자연적 은총을 받았다. 사제로서 겸손과 친절, 온유와 관대함을 지닌 그는 진정 하느님 백성의 거룩한 목자였다.

In fact, he received many supernatural graces from God. As a priest, with his humility, kindness, gentleness and generosity, he was truly a holy shepherd of God's people. 

 

복음에 대한 봉사와 하느님 백성의 그리스도교적 양성을 위한 길고도 활동적인 삶을 산 그는 1962년 7월 26일 선종하였다.

After a long and active life in the service of the Gospel and the Christian formation of God's people, he died on July 26, 1962.
