'왕의 독수리'라는 뜻을 지닌 성 대 파코미오(Saint Pachomius the Great)는 이집트에서 이교도인 부모의 아들로 태어나 성장했다.

Saint Pachomius the Great, whose name means 'King's Eagle', was born and raised in Egypt as the son of pagan parents. 

 

그는 자신의 뜻과는 상관없이 군대에 징집되어 이곳저곳에서 복무하던 중 그리스도인들의 모범적인 자선활동에 매력을 느껴 1년간 군복무를 한 후 세례를 받았다. 

He was conscripted into the army against his will and while serving here and there, he was attracted to the exemplary charity work of Christians and was baptized after serving in the military for a year. 

 

그 후 그는 좀 더 완전한 신앙생활을 하기 위해 은수자가 되기로 결심하였다. 그는 몇 년 동안 엄격한 금욕주의자였던 스승과 함께 머물며 은수생활을 하였다. 

After that, he decided to become a hermit in order to live a more complete religious life. He lived as a hermit for several years, staying with his teacher, who was a strict ascetic. 

 

어느 날 그는 황페한 마을에 이르렀는데 그곳에 머물며 기도하는 중에 "많은 사람들이 너를 찾아와 수도자가 될 것이니 그곳에 머물러 집을 한 채 지어라" 하는 천사의 음성을 들었다.

One day, he came to a devastated village, and while he was staying there and praying, he heard the voice of an angel saying, “Many people will come to you and become monks. Stay there and build a house.”

 

그리고 한 천사가 그에게 나타나 말하기를 하느님의 뜻은 그가 인류에게 봉사하며 그들을 하느님과 화해시키는 것이라고 하였다.

And an angel appeared to him and said, “It is God’s will that he serve mankind and reconcile them to God.” 

 

그래서 그는 320년경 그곳에 움막을 세웠다. 그러자 즉시 수많은 제자들이 몰려들어 공동체가 형성되었다.

So he built a hut there around 320. Immediately, numerous disciples flocked in and a community was formed. 

 

그가 임종할 즈음에는 그의 수하에 약 3천 명의 수도자들이 있었고, 2개의 수녀원도 있었지만 사제로 서품되지는 않았다. 그는 전염병이 창궐하던 지역에서 환자들을 돌보다가 전염되어 346년 또는 347년 9월 5일에 세상을 떠났다.

By the time of his death, he had about 3,000 monks under his wing and two convents, but he was not ordained a priest. He died on September 5, 346 or 347, after becoming infected while caring for patients in an area where the epidemic was rife. 

 

그는 수도회의 창시자로 꼽히며 서방 수도생활의 아버지로 존경을 받는다.

He is considered the founder of monasticism and is revered as the father of monastic life in the West.
