전승에 따르면 그는 부유한 부모의 아들로 태어났으나 일찍이 부모님을 여의고 고아가 된 그는 삼촌에게 맡겨졌다.
According to tradition, he was born as the son of wealthy parents, but his parents died at a young age and he became an orphan and was left in the care of his uncle.
그는 삼촌을 따라 로마로 와서 살게 되었고, 그곳에서 그리스도교로 개종하고 세례를 받았다.
He followed his uncle to live in Rome, where he converted to Christianity and was baptized.
그는 그리스도교 박해가 한창이던 때 14살의 나이로 로마의 신상 앞에 희생제물을 바치라는 요구를 받았다.
At the age of 14, at the height of Christian persecution, he was asked to offer a sacrifice to a Roman god.
황제는 권력을 약속하며 어린 그를 회유했지만, 그는 몸은 비록 어린아이지만 마음만은 노인과도 같다며 단호히 거절하였다. 그리고 참수형을 받고 순교의 월계관을 썼다.
The emperor tried to cajole the young man with promises of power, but he resolutely refused, saying that although he had the body of a child, his mind was like that of an old man. He was then beheaded and crowned with the laurel wreath of martyrdom.
