성녀 마리아 도메니카 마자렐로(Saint Maria Domenica Mazzarello)는 1837년 5월 9일 이탈리아에서 농부인 부모님에게서 태어났다.
Saint Maria Domenica Mazzarello was born on May 9, 1837 in Italy to farmer parents.
그녀는 어려서부터 맏이로서 아버지를 도와 포도밭에서 일하며 동생들을 돌보고 집안일을 거들었다. 그런 가운데도 매일 미사에 빠지지 않고 참례했고 교리 공부나 성당 활동에도 적극적인 자세를 보였다.
From a young age, as the eldest child, she helped her father work in the vineyard, looked after her younger siblings, and helped with household chores. Despite this, he attended mass every day and showed an active attitude in studying the doctrine and participating in church activities.
그녀는 본당 신부가 만든 신심 단체는 본당에서 행하는 교리 교육 외에는 어떠한 교육도 받을 수 없었던 시골 마을의 소녀들을 돌보는 데 힘썼다.
The pious group founded by the parish priest worked hard to care for girls in rural villages who could not receive any education other than the catechism provided by the parish.
여성과 아동의 권리가 심각하게 침해받고 있던 당시 이탈리아의 상황에서 이 신심 단체에 속한 어린 소녀들이 범죄나 매춘의 길에 빠지지 않고 그리스도교 정신으로 올바르게 성장하도록 도와주었다.
In a situation in Italy at the time when women's and children's rights were being seriously violated, young girls belonging to this religious group were helped to grow properly in the spirit of Christianity without falling into crime or prostitution.
1857년에 전염병이 급속히 퍼지는 일이 생겼다. 스무 살의 그녀와 동료들은 전염병으로 고통받는 사람들을 구하려고 백방으로 노력했으나 그녀 또한 감염된 친척들을 돌보다가 병에 걸리고 말았다.
In 1857, an epidemic broke out rapidly. The 20-year-old and her colleagues tried everything they could to save people suffering from the infectious disease, but she also fell ill while caring for infected relatives.
고생 끝에 겨우 회복되기는 했으나 이전 같은 건강한 몸은 돌아오지 않았다. 그러던 중 기도 중에 “너에게 소녀들을 맡긴다!”라는 성모님의 목소리를 듣는 환시를 체험하였다.
Although he finally recovered after suffering, his healthy body did not return to the same level as before. Then, while praying, he experienced a vision in which he heard the Virgin Mary's voice saying, “I entrust the girls to you!”
그녀는 성 요한 보스코(Saint John Bosco)와 만남이 계기가 되어 살레시오 수녀회(Salesian Sisters of Don Bosco)가 설립되었다.
Her meeting with Saint John Bosco led to the establishment of the Salesian Sisters of Don Bosco.
1877년 선교를 위해 처음으로 우루과이로 파견되는 수녀들을 배웅하기 위해 동행했던 그녀는 돌아오던 중 지병이 악화되었고 1881년 5월 14일 “천국에서 만나자!”라는 말을 남기고 불과 마흔네 살의 나이로 선종하였다.
In 1877, she accompanied the nuns sent to Uruguay for the first time for missionary work. On her way back, her chronic illness worsened, and she died at the age of only 44 on May 14, 1881, saying, “See you in heaven!”
