사도 성 마티아(Saint Matthias the Apostle)는 열두 사도 중 유다 이스카리옷(Judas Iscariot)의 배반과 죽음으로 비어 있는 자리를 채우기 위해 사도로 선출된 예수님의 제자이다.
Saint Matthias the Apostle is a disciple of Jesus who was elected as an apostle to fill the position left vacant by the betrayal and death of Judas Iscariot among the twelve apostles.
마티아(Matthias)의 의미는 ‘하느님의 선물’이란 뜻이다. 신약성경 안에서 열두 사도로 선출된 사실 이외에 그에 관한 언급이 더는 나오지 않는다.
The meaning of Matthias is ‘gift of God.’ There is no further mention of him in the New Testament other than the fact that he was elected as one of the twelve apostles.
그의 순교 방식에 대해서도 십자가형 또는 참수형을 받았다는 두 가지 전승이 주로 전해지고 있다.
There are mainly two traditions about his method of martyrdom: he was crucified or beheaded.
전승마다 다르긴 하지만 그는 사도가 된 후 오랫동안 유다 지방에서 복음을 전하다가 이방인 지역으로 갔는데, 남쪽으로 에티오피아까지 가서 내륙에서 복음을 전하다가 십자가에 못 박혀 순교했다.
Although each tradition is different, after becoming an apostle, he preached the gospel in the Judean region for a long time, then went to the Gentile region, and then went south to Ethiopia, preaching the gospel in the interior, and was crucified and martyred.
또 다른 전승에 따르면 그는 예루살렘(Jerusalem)에서 유다인에게 돌에 맞은 후 목이 잘려 순교했다고 한다.
According to another tradition, he was martyred by having his head cut off after being stoned by Jews in Jerusalem.
