성 미카엘 가리코이트(Saint Michel Garicoïts)는 프랑스에서 가난한 농부의 아들로 태어났다. 그의 가족은 프랑스 혁명의 박해를 피해서 온 사제들에게 은신처를 제공하고 있었다.
Saint Michel Garicoïts was born in France as the son of a poor farmer. His family was providing shelter to priests fleeing persecution during the French Revolution.
산중생활이 대부분인 그는 여느 아이들과 다름없이 이웃의 목장에서 양을 치는 평범한 목동이었지만, 어려서부터 가끔씩 사제가 되고 싶다는 소망을 표현하곤 하였다. 그러나 너무나 가난했던 그의 부모는 아들의 소망을 바라볼 수밖에 없었다.
Living mostly in the mountains, he was an ordinary shepherd who herded sheep on a neighbor's ranch like any other child, but from an early age he occasionally expressed his desire to become a priest. However, his parents, who were so poor, had no choice but to look forward to their son's wishes.
그러나 그의 할머니는 다른 생각을 가지고 있었다. 할머니는 본당신부를 찾아가서 손자 이야기를 했고 그 결과 그는 그 본당신부의 주선으로 그 지방의 대학에 들어갔다.
But his grandmother had other ideas. The grandmother visited the local priest and told him about her grandson, and as a result, he entered a local university through the local priest's arrangement.
그러나 부모가 학비를 부담할 수 없었기 때문에 그는 본당 사제관이나 주교관에서 일을 해야만 하였다.
However, because his parents could not pay his tuition, he had to work at the parish rectory or bishop's home.
그는 비록 시골 목동이었지만 매우 현명하고 또 건강했다. 이렇게 해서 그는 1823년 사제로 서품되었고 보좌신부로서 사제생활을 시작했다.
Although he was a country shepherd, he was very wise and healthy. In this way, he was ordained a priest in 1823 and began his priestly life as an assistant priest.
그는 하느님을 믿지 않는 이들에게 복음을 전하는 선교사제 양성 계획을 구체화시킬 심산으로 동료들과 함께 공동생활을 시작하였다.
He began living together with his colleagues with the intention of concretizing his plan to train missionaries to spread the gospel to those who did not believe in God.
이렇게 해서 1838년에 베타람의 성심 신부회(Congregation of the Sacred Heart of Jesus of Bétharram)가 탄생하였다.
