교황 성 요한 1세(Pope Saint John I)는 이탈리아에서 태어났으나 초기 생애에 대해 자세한 이야기는 전해지지 않는다.

Pope Saint John I was born in Italy, but no details are known about his early life. 

 

523년 8월 13일에 교황 성 호르미스다(Saint Hormisdas)를 계승하여 교황으로 선출되었다.

On August 13, 523, he was elected Pope, succeeding Pope Saint Hormisdas. 

 

동로마제국 황제인 유스티누스 1세가 이단 척결을 앞세워 아리우스주의자들을 박해하자, 아리우스주의자이면서 동고트족과 이탈리아의 왕인 테오도리쿠스(Theodoricus)가 그에게 도움을 청했다.

When Justin I, emperor of the Eastern Roman Empire, persecuted the Arianists in the name of eradicating heresy, Theodoricus, an Arianist and king of the Ostrogoths and Italy, asked him for help. 

 

즉 그에게 콘스탄티노플(Constantinople)로 유스티누스 1세 황제를 직접 찾아가 아리우스주의자들의 건물 압수와 강제 개종을 통한 박해를 중단하도록 부탁해달라는 것이었다.

In other words, he was asked to go directly to Emperor Justin I in Constantinople and ask him to stop persecuting Arianists through confiscation of their buildings and forced conversions. 

 

525년 교황으로서는 처음으로 동로마제국에 도착한 그는 황제의 융숭한 대접을 받았다. 당시 서로마제국은 이미 멸망한 상태였다.

He arrived in the Eastern Roman Empire in 525 as the first pope and was treated warmly by the emperor. At that time, the Western Roman Empire had already collapsed. 

 

이런 상황에서 서로마제국의 상징적 대표인 그와 황제 유스티누스 1세의 만남은 서로마제국 교회와 동로마제국 교회 간의 유대감뿐만 아니라, 로마제국의 재통일을 꿈꾸는 황제와의 관계를 한층 강화하는 계기가 되었다.

In this situation, the meeting between him, the symbolic representative of the Western Roman Empire, and Emperor Justin I served as an opportunity to further strengthen not only the bond between the churches of the Western Roman Empire and the Eastern Roman Empire, but also the relationship with the emperor who dreamed of reunification of the Roman Empire. 

 

협상 결과는 만족스러웠지만, 강제로 개종한 사람들이 다시 아리우스주의 이단으로 돌아가는 것에 대해서는 그가 강력히 반대하였다.

Although the results of the negotiations were satisfactory, he strongly opposed the idea of ​​forcibly converted people returning to the Arian heresy. 

 

그는 황제와 좋은 관계를 유지하며 그의 대관식도 집전한 것으로 전해진다. 또한 동로마제국에 있던 거의 모든 주교가 교황의 수위권을 인정하는 결과도 얻었다.

It is said that he maintained a good relationship with the emperor and even performed his coronation ceremony. In addition, almost all bishops in the Eastern Roman Empire recognized the primacy of the Pope. 

 

그런데 자신이 통치하는 지역에서의 독립운동에 대해 경각심을 가지고 있던 테오도리쿠스 왕은 아리우스주의자의 입장에서 협상 결과가 미흡하다고 판단했다.

However, King Theodoric, who was wary of independence movements in the region he ruled, judged the results of the negotiations to be insufficient from an Arianist perspective. 

 

그리고 귀향하는 그를 동로마제국과 공모했다는 혐의로 체포하여 자신의 왕국 수도인 라벤나(Ravenna)의 감옥에 가두었다.

And when he returned home, he was arrested on charges of conspiring with the Eastern Roman Empire and imprisoned in Ravenna, the capital of his kingdom. 

 

이 감옥에서 고령으로 쇠약해진 교황 성 요한 1세는 526년 5월 18일 숨을 거두었다.

Pope Saint John I, weakened by old age, died in this prison on May 18, 526.
