성 둔스타노(Saint Dunstan)는 영국에서 귀족 가문의 아들로 태어났다. 그는 어린 시절 중병 또는 사고로 죽을 위험을 처했으나 기적적으로 무사할 수 있었다.
Saint Dunstan was born in England to a noble family. As a child, he was at risk of death from a serious illness or accident, but was miraculously saved.
둔스타노(Dunstan)의 의미는 ‘짙은 돌’을 뜻한다.
Dunstan means ‘dark stone’.
어려서부터 학문과 예술, 수공예 등에 탁월한 재능을 보였던 그는 청년이 되어 왕의 부름을 받고 궁정에 들어가 활동하게 되었다.
He showed outstanding talent in learning, art, and handicrafts from a young age, and when he became a young man, he was called by the king and entered the royal court.
그리고 얼마 지나지 않아 왕의 인정을 받았는데, 동시에 동료들의 시기와 질투의 대상이 되었다. 결국 그는 동료들의 모함으로 궁정을 떠나야 했다.
And soon he was recognized by the king, but at the same time he became the object of envy and jealousy of his colleagues. In the end, he had to leave the palace due to the framing of his colleagues.
그러던 중 온몸의 피부가 부어오르는 심각한 병에 걸렸는데, 아마도 궁정에서 떠나올 때 반대자들에게 구타를 당하고 오염된 구덩이에 빠지면서 감염된 결과로 생각되었다.
Meanwhile, he contracted a serious illness that caused the skin on his entire body to swell. It was thought that he was infected as a result of being beaten by opponents and falling into a polluted pit while leaving the palace.
다행히도 병에서 치유된 후 그는 수도사가 되려는 마음을 굳히게 되었다. 946년 왕이 뜻밖에 살해되자 그는 왕의 동생이 왕좌로 나아가는데 자문관이 되었다.
Fortunately, after being cured from his illness, he decided to become a monk. When the king was unexpectedly murdered in 946, he became an advisor to the king's younger brother on his way to the throne.
그리고 그의 도움을 받아 모든 수도원을 대상으로 원대한 개혁 작업을 추진하였다. 그런데 왕이 사망한 후 그의 조카가 왕위를 계승하면서부터 왕은 그의 가장 큰 적이 되었다.
And with his help, he pursued a far-reaching reform project targeting all monasteries. However, after the king died and his nephew succeeded to the throne, the king became his biggest enemy.
모든 재산을 압류당하고 추방당한 그는 이에 굴하지 않았다. 왕이 축출되면서 그는 다시 잉글랜드로 되돌아올 수 있었다.
Even though all his property was confiscated and he was exiled, he did not give in. With the king overthrown, he was able to return to England.
그는 새 왕의 자문관으로 16년 동안 있으면서 그의 잘못을 발견하는 즉시 꾸짖고 진언을 올렸다. 그 후 그는 정계에서 은퇴하여 교육에 전념하다가 선종하였다.
He served as the new king's advisor for 16 years, scolding and proclaiming his mistakes as soon as he discovered them. Afterwards, he retired from politics and devoted himself to education before his death.
