케르마르탱의 성 이보(Saint Ivo of Kermartin)는 1253년 10월 17일 프랑스에서 귀족 가문의 아들로 태어났다.

Saint Ivo of Kermartin was born in France on October 17, 1253 into a noble family. 

 

고향에서 신심 깊은 부모의 교육을 받고 성장한 그는 1267년에 파리(Paris)로 가서 민법을 공부하고, 이어 1277년에 교회법을 공부하기 위해 오를레앙(Orleans)으로 갔다.

After receiving education from his devout parents in his hometown, he went to Paris in 1267 to study civil law, and then went to Orleans in 1277 to study church law. 

 

유학 생활 중에 그는 늘 ‘성인이 되라’고 가르치셨던 어머니의 말씀을 마음에 새기고 절제하는 생활을 하며 면학과 기도 생활에 전념했다. 그리고 쉬는 날이면 자주 병원을 방문해 병자들을 돌보는 것도 잊지 않았다.

While studying abroad, he kept in mind his mother's words, who always taught him to ‘become a saint,’ and lived a temperate life, devoting himself to study and prayer. And he did not forget to visit the hospital frequently on his days off and take care of the sick. 

 

그는 교회법원과 사회법원의 판사로 임명되었고 늘 공정한 판결을 내리고자 애섰다. 그리고 그는 특별히 가난하고 힘없는 사람들의 보호하고 그들에게 공평한 판결과 기회를 주고자 힘썼다.

He was appointed as a judge of the church and social courts and always strived to make fair decisions. And he especially worked to protect the poor and powerless and give them fair judgment and opportunities. 

 

그는 관행처럼 주어지던 선물과 뇌물을 거부하고, 가난한 이들이 부탁한 사건은 무료로 처리할 뿐 아니라 필요한 비용까지도 스스로 부담했다.

He refused the customary gifts and bribes, and not only handled cases requested by the poor for free, but also borne the necessary expenses himself. 

 

그러면서 그는 ‘과부와 고아와 가난한 이들의 변호인’이라는 별명을 얻었다.

At the same time, he earned the nickname ‘the defender of widows, orphans, and the poor.’ 

 

신학과 성경과 공부한 그는 1284년에 사제품을 받았으며 왕의 부당한 세금 부과에 항의하며 국가로부터 교회의 권리를 지키기 위해 힘썼다.

After studying theology and the Bible, he was ordained a priest in 1284 and worked to protect the rights of the church from the state, protesting against the king's unfair taxation. 

 

그는 본당 사목을 하면서도 자신의 전공을 살려 가난한 이들의 권익을 돕는데 힘썼고 구호소를 세워 병든 이들을 헌신적으로 돌보았다. 

While serving as pastor of the parish, he utilized his expertise to help the rights and interests of the poor and devotedly cared for the sick by establishing a relief center. 

 

설교 능력 또한 비범했던 그는 일생 엄격하고 청빈한 삶을 살다가 1303년 5월 19일 선종하였다.

He also had extraordinary preaching skills and lived a strictly and impoverished life until his death on May 19, 1303.
