교황 성 바오로 6세(Pope Saint Paul VI)는 1897년 9월 26일 이탈리아 부유한 가정에서 태어나 어려서부터 종교적 분위기 속에서 성장하였다.

Pope Saint Paul VI was born into a wealthy Italian family on September 26, 1897, and grew up in a religious atmosphere from an early age. 

 

그는 허약한 체질에 수줍음을 잘 타는 성격이었으나 총명하고 신심이 깊었다. 1920년 5월 29일 그는 사제품을 받았다.

He had a weak constitution and was shy, but he was intelligent and deeply religious. On May 29, 1920, he was ordained a priest. 

 

그는 제2차 세계대전 때는 포로 문제 유대인 문제 등에 관심을 두고 활동했으며 전쟁으로 집을 잃은 무주택자들을 위해서도 노력하였다.

During World War II, he was interested in the POW issue and Jewish issues, and also worked for homeless people who lost their homes in the war. 

 

또한 그는 전쟁의 상처를 치유하며 왕성한 사목활동을 펼쳤다. 1958년 12월 15일 그는 추기경에 임명되었다. 1963년 6월 3일 그는 교황 요한 23세가 선종한 후 6월 21일 새 교황으로 선출되었다.

He also healed the wounds of war and engaged in vigorous pastoral activities. On December 15, 1958, he was appointed cardinal. On June 3, 1963, he was elected as the new Pope on June 21 after the death of Pope John XXIII. 

 

그는 비행기와 헬리콥터를 타고 외국을 방문한 최초의 교황이다. 또한 그는 다수의 교황 문헌을 통해 교리를 해석하고 세상 속 교회의 역할에 대한 견해를 밝혔다.

He is the first Pope to visit a foreign country by plane and helicopter. He also interpreted doctrines through numerous papal documents and expressed his views on the role of the church in the world. 

 

그는 평신도와 여성의 교회 참여를 증진하고 허례허식을 버리는 모습을 보여주었던 그는 1978년 8월 6일 미사를 드리다 심장마비로 선종하였다.

He promoted the participation of laymen and women in the church and showed a discarding of pretentiousness. He died of a heart attack while attending mass on August 6, 1978.
