캔터베리의 성 아우구스티노(Saint Augustine of Canterbury)의 가문이나 청소년 시절 혹은 교육과정에 관한 정확한 자료는 없다.

There is no accurate information about Saint Augustine of Canterbury's family, youth, or education. 

 

다만 그는 이탈리아에서 태어났으며 베네딕토회 수도사라는 사실만이 알려져 있다. 그는 교황에게서 앵글로색슨족을 복음화시키라는 사명을 받고 40명의 수도자와 함께 영국으로 파견되었다.

However, what is known is that he was born in Italy and was a Benedictine monk. He received a mission from the Pope to evangelize the Anglo-Saxons and was dispatched to England with 40 monks. 

 

당시 영국은 복음이 전해졌으나 그리스도교가 거의 사라져 다시 선교를 시작해야 할 형편이었다.

At that time, the gospel was preached to England, but Christianity had almost disappeared and missionaries had to start again. 

 

다행히 영국의 여러 왕국이 같은 종족끼리 연합체를 형성하고 왕을 뽑았는데 그는 선교사들에게 상당히 호의적이었다.

Fortunately, the various kingdoms of England formed a union among members of the same tribe and elected a king, who was quite friendly to the missionaries. 

 

그의 설교와 활동은 놀라운 성과를 가져왔다. 수많은 개종자가 탄생했고 그의 설교와 모범을 보고 왕과 신하들이 세례를 받았다.

His preaching and activities brought remarkable results. Many converts were born, and the king and his subjects were baptized after seeing his sermons and example. 

 

그러면서 그와 라틴계 선교사들은 앵글로색슨족을 선교하는 데 있어서 켄트 주교들의 도움을 받고자 했으나 그들은 정복자인 앵글로색슨족의 개종을 달가워하지 않았다.

At the same time, he and the Latin missionaries wanted to receive help from the Bishops of Kent in missionary work among the Anglo-Saxons, but they were not pleased with the conversion of the conquering Anglo-Saxons. 

 

그는 라틴 전례와 켈트 전례의 일치를 위해 노력했으나 큰 성공을 거두지 못하고 선종하였다.

He tried to unify the Latin and Celtic liturgies, but died without much success.
