성 베다(Saint Bede)는 영국에서 태어나 7세 떄 성 베드로 수도원으로 보내져 교육을 받았다. 그는 성장한 뒤에는 수도자가 되었고 30세에 사제품을 받았다.
Saint Bede was born in England and was sent to Saint Peter's Monastery to be educated at the age of seven. After he grew up, he became a monk and was ordained a priest at the age of 30.
베다(Bede)의 의미는 ‘기도’를 뜻한다.
The meaning of Bede is ‘prayer.’
그는 몇 차례의 짧은 여행을 제외하고는 늘 수도원 안에서 생활하면서 주로 성경 연구에 전념했으며, 수도원 내의 교육과 저술 활동에 몸을 바쳤다.
Except for a few short trips, he always lived in the monastery, devoting himself mainly to the study of the Bible, and to teaching and writing within the monastery.
그는 당대의 가장 박학한 사람으로 존경받았고, 영문학사에 큰 영향을 끼쳤다. 성경에 관한 그의 주해서들은 당대에 가장 권위가 있었고 중요시되었으나, 그는 역사가로서 더 유명하다.
He was respected as one of the most learned men of his time and had a great influence on the history of English literature. Although his commentaries on the Bible were the most authoritative and important of his time, he is more famous as a historian.
만년에 그는 병으로 고생하던 그는 735년 5월 26일 수도원에서 사망한 것으로 추정되고 있다. 그는 뛰어난 학자이면서도 겸손하였으며 ‘영국 역사의 아버지’라고도 불린다.
He suffered from illness in his later years and is believed to have died in a monastery on May 26, 735. Although he was an outstanding scholar, he was humble and is also called the ‘father of British history.’
