성녀 막달레나 소피아 바라(Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat)는 술통 제조업자인 아버지와 어머니의 막내딸로 프랑스에서 태어났다.
Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat was born in France, the youngest daughter of a mother and father who were barrel makers.
그녀는 열한 살 위의 큰 오빠 루이(Louis)로부터 라틴어와 고전문학, 신학과 철학 등 좋은 교육을 받았는데, 오빠는 나중에 예수회 사제가 되었고 동생에게 항상 엄격한 규율과 벌을 주었다고 한다.
She received a good education in Latin, classical literature, theology, and philosophy from her older brother Louis, who was 11 years older than her. He later became a Jesuit priest and is said to have always given strict discipline and punishment to his younger brother.
오빠는 동생의 교육을 위해 부모의 만류에도 불구하고 16세 된 그녀를 파리(Paris)로 데리고 가서 여러 젊은 여성들과의 만남과 교육의 기회를 제공하였다.
Despite her parents' dissuasion, her older brother took her to Paris when she was 16 and provided her with opportunities to meet and educate young women.
당시 프랑스 사회는 대혁명의 여파로 전통적인 가치와 신앙의 위기를 겪고 있었다.
At the time, French society was experiencing a crisis of traditional values and beliefs in the aftermath of the Great Revolution.
이런 시대적 상황을 부르심의 징표로 감지한 그녀는 21세 되던 때에 예수회의 신부를 만나 장차 성심 수녀회(Society of the Sacred Heart)를 창설하는 계기를 마련하였다.
Sensing this situation of the times as a sign of calling, she met a Jesuit priest at the age of 21, which provided the opportunity to found the Sisters of the Sacred Heart.
성심 수녀회(Society of the Sacred Heart)는 예수 성심의 무한한 사랑에 보답하고 그 사랑을 널리 알리는 것을 근본정신으로 하며, 특히 청소년 교육을 통하여 설립 목적을 구현해가고자 했다.
The Society of the Sacred Heart's fundamental spirit is to repay the infinite love of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and to spread that love, and in particular, it sought to realize its founding purpose through youth education.
수녀원장으로서 일생 동안 수녀회의 발전을 위해 헌신한 그녀는 1865년 5월 25일 선종하였다.
As the abbess of the convent, she devoted her entire life to the development of the nuns and died on May 25, 1865.
