성녀 딤프나(Saint Dymphna)는 전승에 따르면 이교도 족장의 딸로 아일랜드에서 태어났다.

According to tradition, Saint Dymphna was born in Ireland as the daughter of a pagan chieftain. 

 

그녀는 그리스도교에 헌신하던 아름다운 여인이었던 어머니의 배려로 유아 세례를 받고 그리스도교 신앙 교육을 받으며 성장했다.

She was baptized as an infant and grew up receiving Christian education through the care of her mother, a beautiful woman devoted to Christianity. 

 

그래서 어린 나이에도 불구하고 이미 결혼하지 않고 일생을 그리스도께 봉헌한 삶을 살겠다는 결심을 했다. 그러나 얼마 후 어머니가 세상을 떠나면서 예상하지 못한 시련이 밀려왔다.

So, despite her young age, she decided not to get married and to live a life dedicated to Christ. But soon after, when his mother passed away, an unexpected ordeal arose. 

 

아내를 깊이 사랑했던 그녀의 아버지는 아내를 잃은 슬픔을 이기지 못해 점점 광기 어린 사람으로 변해갔다. 재혼을 권유하는 신하들의 강력한 요청을 받아들여 아내와 같은 여성을 찾았으나 그 뜻을 이룰 수 없었다.

Her father, who loved his wife deeply, could not overcome the sorrow of losing her and gradually turned into a crazy person. He accepted the strong requests of his subjects to remarry and looked for a woman like his wife, but he could not achieve his wish. 

 

그런 와중에 점점 죽은 아내만큼 아름답게 성장하는 딸을 보며 그녀와 결혼하려는 끔찍한 생각마저 하게 되었다. 그녀는 끔찍하게 변해버린 아버지에게서 벗어나고자 궁을 빠져나와 자신의 고해신부를 찾아갔다.

Meanwhile, as he watched his daughter grow up to be as beautiful as his dead wife, he even had the terrible thought of marrying her. To escape from her father, who had changed horribly, she left the palace and went to see her confessor. 

 

그리고 그의 도움을 받아 그녀는 피신할 수 있었다. 그녀는 정착한 후 고해신부의 지도를 받아 은수자로 살면서 그 지역의 가난하고 병든 이들을 위한 쉼터를 짓고 기도와 봉사에 전념했다.

And with his help she was able to escape. After settling down, she lived as a hermit under the guidance of her confessor, building a shelter for the poor and sick in the area, and devoted herself to prayer and service. 

 

그러나 오래지 않아 분노한 그녀의 부친은 사람들을 동원해 딸의 행적을 추적했고, 마침내 딸과 동료들의 은신처를 발견하자 병사들과 함께 들이닥쳤다.

However, before long, her enraged father mobilized people to trace his daughter's whereabouts, and when he finally discovered the hiding place of his daughter and her colleagues, he stormed in with his soldiers. 

 

그는 병사들을 시켜 고해신부를 살해하고, 그녀에게 아일랜드로 돌아가자고 강요했다.

He ordered his soldiers to murder his confessor and force her to return to Ireland. 

 

하지만 끝까지 돌아가기를 거부하며 저항하자 분노한 그녀의 부친은 직접 칼을 뽑아 자신의 딸을 참수했다고 한다. 당시 그녀의 나이는 15살이었다.

However, it is said that when she resisted and refused to go back to the end, her enraged father pulled out a sword and beheaded his daughter. At the time, she was 15 years old.
