성 요셉 마렐로(Saint Joseph Marello)는 1844년 12월 26일 이탈리아에서 태어났다.
Saint Joseph Marello was born in Italy on December 26, 1844.
그는 어려서부터 동정 마리아께 대한 특별한 신심을 갖고 있었고, 이 신심은 후에 그가 성소를 선택하고 자신의 선택에 충실할 수 있는 밑거름이 되었다.
He had a special devotion to the Virgin Mary from a young age, and this devotion later became the foundation for him to choose a vocation and be faithful to his choice.
그는 12살 때 신학교에 들어갔는데, 그의 선한 품성과 거룩한 생활은 동료들의 모범이 되었다.
He entered the seminary at the age of 12, and his good character and holy life became a model for his peers.
19살에 발진티푸스에 걸렸을 때 그는 살려주시면 꼭 사제가 되겠다고 성모님께 약속했고, 무사히 병이 나아 1868년 9월 19일 사제품을 받았다.
When he contracted typhus at the age of 19, he promised the Virgin Mary that he would become a priest if she spared his life. He recovered safely and was ordained a priest on September 19, 1868.
그는 고해성사와 영적 지도와 교리교육에 헌신하며 젊은이들의 윤리와 종교 교육을 충실히 도왔다. 또한 어려운 시기를 맞은 교회를 위해 교황과 그의 활동을 지원하기 위한 활동을 통해 평신도들을 끌어 모았다.
He devoted himself to the sacrament of confession, spiritual guidance, and catechesis, and faithfully helped young people with their ethical and religious education. It also attracted laypeople through activities to support the Pope and his activities for the church that was going through difficult times.
그러면서 그는 카르투지오회에 들어가 전적으로 자신을 주님께 봉헌하는 삶에 대해 고심하였다. 하지만 그의 주교는 하느님께서 그에게 다른 것을 요구하고 계시다는 것을 일깨우며 단념하도록 설득했다.
At the same time, he entered the Carthusian Order and contemplated a life of consecrating himself entirely to the Lord. But his bishop persuaded him to give up, reminding him that God was asking something different of him.
그는 1878년 3월 14일 성 요셉의 봉헌 수도회(Oblates of Saint Joseph)를 설립하였다.
He founded the Oblates of Saint Joseph on March 14, 1878.
모든 이에게 가까이 다가가고, 성직자와 평신도 간의 일치를 이루기 위해 무진 애를 썼던 그는 1895년 5월 30일 선종하였다.
He died on May 30, 1895, having worked tirelessly to be close to everyone and to achieve unity between clergy and laity.
