성 후안 그란데 로만(Saint Juan Grande Román)는 1546년 3월 6일 에스파냐에서 태어났다. 그가 15세 때 부친이 사별하자 포목상을 하는 친척 가게에서 일을 거들며 지냈다.

Saint Juan Grande Román was born in Spain on March 6, 1546. When his father died when he was 15, he spent his days helping out at a relative's dry goods store. 

 

그는 사업 수완이 뛰어났지만 세상 일이 그의 정신을 빼앗지는 못하였다. 그는 오히려 이런 일들에 조금도 흥미를 보이지 않았다. 그래서 22세 때 그는 자신의 소유물을 모두 가난한 이들에게 나눠준 뒤에 은둔하였다.

Although he had outstanding business acumen, worldly affairs could not take his mind away. On the contrary, he did not show the slightest interest in these things. So at the age of 22, he gave away all his possessions to the poor and went into hiding. 

 

그는 어릴 때부터 불우한 생활을 하였지만 그 자신은 좋은 성품을 지닌 사람으로 자처하면서 그늘진 구석을 보이지 않았다.

Although he lived a disadvantaged life since he was young, he considered himself a person of good character and did not show any shadowy corners. 

 

어느 날 그는 길가에 누워있는 두 사람의 부랑자를 보자마자 연민의 정을 이기지 못해 자신의 움막으로 데려와서 따뜻이 돌보아 주었다. 이런 일이 여러 번 반복되자 그는 하느님의 뜻이 이런 데에 있음을 알고 은둔소를 떠났다.

One day, when he saw two tramps lying on the side of the road, he couldn't help but feel sympathy for them, so he brought them to his hut and cared for them warmly. When this happened several times, he realized that God's will was in this and left the hermitage. 

 

그는 죄수들을 위해 봉사하기 시작하였다. 3년 동안 그는 비참한 환경 속에서 그들을 위해 구걸하고 봉사하다가 병원 일을 맡게 되었다.

He began serving prisoners. For three years, he begged and served for them in miserable conditions, and then took over work at the hospital. 

 

이를 보고 감동한 어느 부유한 부부가 병원을 지어주자 그는 젊은이들을 모았다. 또한 그는 가난한 처녀에게는 결혼 지참금을 마련해 주었고, 영국과의 전투에서 상처를 입은 에스파냐 군인들을 치료하는데 헌신하였다.

A wealthy couple was moved by this and built a hospital, and they gathered young people there. He also provided dowries for poor girls and devoted himself to treating Spanish soldiers wounded in battles with England.
