성 필리포 스말도네(Saint Filippo Smaldone)는 교회뿐만 아니라 국가적으로도 정치 · 사회적 혼돈의 시기였던 1848년 7월 27일 이탈리아의 나폴리(Napoli)에서 태어났다.
Saint Filippo Smaldone was born in Naples, Italy, on July 27, 1848, a time of political and social chaos not only for the church but also for the nation.
그를 둘러싼 사회적 · 정치적 · 종교적 불안에도 불구하고 그는 교회 활동에 헌신하며 사제가 될 결심을 했다. 신학교에 입학하여 철학과 신학을 배우면서도 많은 소외된 이들과 청각장애인들을 돕는 일에 참여하였다.
Despite the social, political, and religious unrest surrounding him, he devoted himself to church activities and decided to become a priest. He entered a seminary and studied philosophy and theology while also participating in helping many underprivileged people and the hearing impaired.
1871년 9월 23일 사제품을 받은 그는 흑사병이 급속히 확산되던 때에 환자들과의 잦은 접촉으로 인해 감염되었으나 평소 마음속에 특별히 간직하며 일생 동안 헌신한 폼페이(Popmeii)의 성모 마리아께 전구함으로써 기적적으로 치유되었다.
He was ordained a priest on September 23, 1871. At a time when the Black Death was spreading rapidly, he became infected due to frequent contact with patients, but was miraculously cured by praying to the Virgin Mary of Pompeii.
그는 청각장애인을 위한 사목에 자신을 바쳤고 이를 자신이 수행할 사명의 근본적인 목적으로 삼았다.
He devoted himself to pastoral care for the hearing impaired and made this the fundamental goal of his mission.
1885년 3월 25일 청각장애인을 위한 성심의 살레시오 수녀회(Salesian Sisters of the Sacred Hearts)를 설립하였다. 이후 그는 많은 이들의 요구에 의해 협회의 사업을 앞 못 보는 아이들과 고아들 그리고 소외된 이들에게로 확장해 나갔다.
On March 25, 1885, the Salesian Sisters of the Sacred Hearts for the Deaf were founded. Afterwards, in response to many people's requests, he expanded the association's work to blind children, orphans, and the underprivileged.
하느님과 이웃에 대한 사랑으로 이룩한 그의 위대한 사업은 외적 · 내적으로 많은 시련을 이겨내야만 했던 그는 아버지다운 애정으로 청각장애 학생들을 교육하며 노력을 계속하였다.
His great work, accomplished with love for God and neighbors, had to overcome many external and internal trials. He continued his efforts by educating hearing-impaired students with fatherly affection.
그는 심장 합병증을 동반한 심각한 당뇨병으로 1923년 6월 4일 75세의 나이로 선종하였다.
He died at the age of 75 on June 4, 1923, from severe diabetes accompanied by heart complications.
