크산텐의 성 노르베르토(Saint Norbert of Xanten)는 독일에서 귀족 가문의 아들로 태어났다. 노르베르토(Norbert)의 의미는 ‘북쪽의 밝은 빛’이라는 뜻이다.
Saint Norbert of Xanten was born in Germany to a noble family. Norbert means ‘bright light of the north’.
부모에게 물려받은 재산이 많았던 그는 자신의 지위에 맞지 않는 방탕한 생활을 했다. 그러던 어느 날 예식에 참석하고자 말을 타고 가다가 벼락을 맞아 땅에 떨어졌다.
Having inherited a lot of property from his parents, he led a debauched life unbefitting his status. Then one day, while riding a horse to attend a ceremony, he was struck by lightning and fell to the ground.
얼마 후 의식을 회복한 그는 방탕했던 지난 생활에 대해 깊이 뉘우치며 다음과 같이 주님께 여쭈었다. “주님, 저로 하여금 무엇을 하길 원하십니까?”
After regaining consciousness, he deeply regretted his past life of debauchery and asked the Lord as follows: “Lord, what do you want me to do?”
그러자 “악을 피하고 선을 행하라.”라는 음성이 들리는 것 같았다.
Then I seemed to hear a voice saying, “Avoid evil and do good.”
사제가 된 후 그는 전혀 다른 사람이 되어 전에 있던 곳으로 돌아왔으나 사람들로부터 환영을 받지 못했다.
After becoming a priest, he returned to his former place as a completely different person, but was not welcomed by the people.
그는 자신의 과거를 아는 이들의 온갖 모욕과 냉대를 참으며 과거의 죄를 보속하고 그리스도의 고난을 묵상하는 소중한 기회로 삼았다. 그 후 그는 소유물을 팔아 가난한 이들에게 모두 나누어 주고 본격적으로 보속의 길을 떠났다.
He endured all kinds of insults and cold treatment from those who knew his past, and used it as a precious opportunity to atone for his past sins and meditate on the suffering of Christ. After that, he sold all his possessions, distributed them to the poor, and set out on a path of penance.
기도와 고행을 실천하며 살던 그는 1120년 1월 25일 프레몽트레회(Premonstratensians)를 설립하였다.
He lived a life of prayer and asceticism and founded the Premonstratensians on January 25, 1120.
그 뒤에 그는 황제와 교황 사절의 간청에 굴복하여 마그데부르크의 대주교가 되었다. 1134년 6월 6일 그는 선종하였다.
He later yielded to the entreaties of the Emperor and the Pope and became Archbishop of Magdeburg. He died on June 6, 1134.
