성 마르첼리노 샴파냐(Saint Marcellin Champagnat)는 1789년 5월 20일 프랑스에서 가난한 물방앗간 집에서 태어났다.

Saint Marcellin Champagnat was born in France on May 20, 1789 into a poor water mill family. 

 

그는 신심 깊은 부모로부터 어려서부터 신앙 교육을 받았다. 일찍이 사제의 꿈을 키운 그는 1816년 7월 22일 사제품을 받았다.

He received religious education from a young age from his devout parents. He dreamed of becoming a priest early on and was ordained a priest on July 22, 1816. 

 

그는 신학교 생활 이후 늘 소년들을 교육하는 수도회의 설립에 관심을 가져왔는데 마침내 1817년 마리스타 교육 수사회(Marist Brothers)를 설립하였다.

After attending seminary, he was always interested in establishing a religious order to educate boys, and finally established the Marist Brothers in 1817. 

 

이후 본당 업무의 책임에서 벗어나 자신의 사도직에 전적으로 전념하는 것을 원했던 그는 수도회의 발전을 위해 자신의 여생을 바쳤다.

Afterwards, wanting to free himself from the responsibilities of parish work and devote himself entirely to his apostolate, he devoted the rest of his life to the development of the religious order. 

 

그는 1840년 6월 6일 51세의 나이로 선종하였다.

He died on June 6, 1840 at the age of 51.
