전승에 따르면 팔레르모의 성녀 올리비아(Saint Olivia of Palermo)는 귀족 집안에서 태어났다.
According to tradition, Saint Olivia of Palermo was born into a noble family.
용모가 아름다웠던 그녀는 어려서부터 주님께 자신을 봉헌하길 원했고, 부유한 삶과 현세의 영광보다 가난한 이들에 대한 사랑과 자선에 더 큰 관심을 가졌다.
She had a beautiful appearance and wanted to consecrate herself to the Lord from a young age, and was more interested in love and charity for the poor than in a wealthy life and worldly glory.
454년 반달족이 침략해 팔레르모를 점령한 이후 많은 그리스도인이 신앙을 지키기 위해 순교했다.
After the Vandals invaded and occupied Palermo in 454, many Christians were martyred to protect their faith.
그녀는 13살의 어린 나이에도 불구하고 감옥에 갇힌 그리스도인들을 찾아 그들을 위로하며 믿음을 굳건히 하도록 권면했다. 그녀의 강인한 정신과 신앙은 반달족마저도 감화시켰다.
Even at the young age of 13, she visited imprisoned Christians, comforted them, and encouraged them to strengthen their faith. Her strong spirit and faith influenced even the Vandals.
그녀는 결국 신앙을 포기하도록 회유를 당했지만 다행히 귀족 출신임을 인정받아 어느 동굴에서 은수자로 살 수 있는 허가를 받아 2년 정도 살았다.
She was eventually persuaded to give up her faith, but fortunately she was recognized as a noblewoman and was given permission to live as a hermit in a cave for about two years.
비록 동굴에서 살았지만, 그녀는 뛰어난 신앙으로 기적을 행하고 많은 이교도를 그리스도교로 개종시켰다. 그러자 총독은 그녀를 지하 감옥에 가두고 빛과 음식을 차단했다.
Although she lived in a cave, her extraordinary faith allowed her to perform miracles and convert many pagans to Christianity. Then the governor locked her in a dungeon and denied her light and food.
그녀의 뛰어난 용모 때문에 배교하면 살려준다고 회유하기도 했지만, 그녀는 요지부동이었다. 그래서 맹수들이 우글거리는 곳에 던져 넣기도 하고, 쇠사슬로 묶은 채 끓는 기름통 속에 집어넣기도 했지만 아무런 해도 입지 않고 죽지도 않았다.
Because of her outstanding appearance, they tried to persuade her that they would spare her life if she apostatized, but she remained steadfast. So they threw him into a place full of wild beasts, tied him with chains and threw him into a vat of boiling oil, but he suffered no harm and did not die.
형리들은 하는 수 없이 463년경 6월 10일 참수형으로 그녀의 목숨을 끊었다.
She had no choice but to end her life by beheading on June 10, around 463.
