성 에프렘(Saint Ephrem)은 오늘날 터키의 누사이빈 Nusaybin)에서 태어났다. 전승에 따르면 그는 아버지가 그리스도교로 개종하면서 18세 때 세례성사를 받았다.
Saint Ephrem was born in Nusaybin, modern-day Turkey. According to tradition, he received the sacrament of baptism at the age of 18 when his father converted to Christianity.
그 후 금욕주의자들과 니시비스의 초대 주교의 영향을 받으며 독자적인 신학을 펼쳐나갔다.
Afterwards, he developed his own theology under the influence of ascetics and the first bishop of Nisibis.
그는 로마 제국에 속한 에데사로 이주한 후 그곳에서 신자들에게 설교를 하며 지냈다. 부제 신분이었던 그는 선종할 때까지 10여 년을 이곳의 성경 주석 학교에서 교사로 활동하며 활발한 저술 활동을 벌였다.
He moved to Edessa, part of the Roman Empire, and spent his days preaching to believers there. While he was a deacon, he worked as a teacher at a Bible exegesis school here for about 10 years until his death and actively engaged in writing.
그는 시리아 교회에서 가장 많은 저서를 집필한 학자였다. 그 외에도 그는 성모 마리아에 대한 깊은 신심을 지니고 있었다.
He was the most prolific scholar in the Syrian Church. In addition, he had a deep devotion to the Virgin Mary.
그의 저서는 라틴 교회에서 사용되면서 많은 영향을 끼쳤고 이러한 업적으로 인해 그는 ‘성령의 하프’라는 칭호를 받았다.
His writings had a great influence as they were used in the Latin Church, and for these achievements he was given the title ‘harp of the Holy Spirit.’
그는 죽는 날까지 교사, 성경 주석가, 논쟁가, 설교가, 종교 시인으로 활동하다가 373년 6월 9일 에데사에서 선종하였다.
He worked as a teacher, Bible commentator, debater, preacher, and religious poet until the day he died, dying in Edessa on June 9, 373.
