리옹의 성 이레네오(Saint Irenaeus of Lyon)는 오늘날 튀르키예에서 태어났다. 그 후 그가 언제 무슨 이유로 프랑스의 리옹으로 가게 되었는지는 정확히 알려진 바가 없다.

Saint Irenaeus of Lyon was born in present-day Turkiye. After that, it is not known exactly when and why he went to Lyon, France. 

 

이레네오(Irenaeus)의 의미는 ‘평화를 사랑하는 사람’, ‘주님에게서 오는 평화’라는 뜻이다.

The meaning of Irenaeus is ‘peace-lover’ and ‘peace that comes from the Lord.’ 

 

그는 리옹의 제2대 주교가 되었고 선교 사업에 전념해 리옹 시민의 거의 대부분을 개종시켰다고 전해진다.

He became the second bishop of Lyon and devoted himself to missionary work, reportedly converting most of Lyon's citizens. 

 

또한 그는 영지주의 이단들에 대항하여 정통 교리를 수호했으며 동방교회와 서방교회의 일치와 평화를 위해 노력한 중재자였다.

He also defended orthodox doctrine against Gnostic heresy and was a mediator who worked for unity and peace between the Eastern and Western churches. 

 

그리고 그는 유아세례에 대해 처음으로 언급했으며 그는 “인간은 세례성사를 통해 하느님 안에서 새로 태어나며, 따라서 어린아이도 모두 세례를 받아야 구원된다.”라고 강조했다.

And he mentioned infant baptism for the first time and emphasized that “human beings are born again in God through the sacrament of baptism, and therefore all children must be baptized to be saved.” 

 

일생을 평화와 일치를 위해 헌신한 그는 리옹에서 순교했다고 한다.

He is said to have dedicated his life to peace and unity and was martyred in Lyon.
