치릴로(Cyril)의 의미는 ‘주님’이란 뜻이다.

The meaning of Cyril is ‘Lord.’ 

 

알렉산드리아의 성 치릴로(Saint Cyril of Alexandria)는 어려서부터 사제가 되기로 한 그는 고전과 신학 교육을 받으며 성장했다.

Saint Cyril of Alexandria decided to become a priest from a young age and grew up receiving education in classics and theology. 

 

이후 그는 총대주교인 삼촌이 사망하자 이를 계승하여 알렉산드리아의 총대주교가 되었다.

Afterwards, when his uncle, who was the patriarch, died, he succeeded him and became the patriarch of Alexandria. 

 

정통 가톨릭 신앙을 지키기 위해 애쓰던 그는 430년에 콘스탄티노플의 총대주교인 네스토리우스(Nestorius)와 분쟁에 휘말렸다.

As he struggled to maintain the orthodox Catholic faith, he became embroiled in a dispute with Nestorius, the Patriarch of Constantinople, in 430. 

 

네스토리우스(Nestorius)는 성모님은 하느님의 어머니가 아니라 단순히 인간 예수의 어머니이기 때문에 성모님에게 주어졌던 ‘하느님의 어머니’라는 호칭을 사용할 수 없다고 주장했다.

Nestorius argued that the title ‘Mother of God’ given to the Virgin Mary could not be used because the Virgin Mary was not the mother of God but simply the mother of the human Jesus. 

 

그로 인해 수많은 사람이 이단에 빠지고 많은 성직자와 수도자들도 혼란을 겪게 되었다.

As a result, many people fell into heresy, and many priests and monks also experienced confusion. 

 

그는 강론을 통해 네스토리우스(Nestorius)의 주장을 반박하고 사람들이 이단에 빠지지 않도록 경고했다.

In his sermon, he refuted Nestorius' claims and warned people not to fall into heresy. 

 

하지만 이단에 빠진 사람들이 점점 늘어나자 그는 교황에게 이 사실을 보고하여 네스토리우스(Nestorius)를 단죄하기를 설득했다.

However, as the number of people falling into heresy increased, he reported this to the Pope and persuaded him to condemn Nestorius. 

 

결국 네스토리우스(Nestorius)와 그의 추종 세력을 단죄함으로써 그의 승리로 끝났다. 이런 과정을 겪으며 그리스도론에 대한 교회의 정통 교리가 확고히 정립되는 계기가 되었다.

In the end, it ended in his victory by condemning Nestorius and his followers. Going through this process served as an opportunity for the church's orthodox doctrine of Christology to be firmly established. 

 

그래서 그는 ‘성모 마리아의 신학박사’라는 별칭을 얻었으며 그는 모든 생애를 바쳐 이단 척결을 위해 사목적, 학문적으로 혼신의 노력을 다했다.

Therefore, he was nicknamed ‘The Virgin Mary’s Doctor of Theology’, and he devoted his entire life to eradicating heresy, putting forth his best efforts both pastorally and academically.
