토마스(Thomas)의 의미는 ‘쌍둥이’라는 뜻이다.

The meaning of Thomas is ‘twin’. 

 

사도 성 토마스(Saint Thomas the Apostle)는 열두 사도 중의 한 명이지만 언제 그리고 어디서 사도로 뽑혔는지는 분명하지 않다.

Saint Thomas the Apostle was one of the twelve apostles, but it is not clear when and where he was chosen as an apostle. 

 

다만 그가 중요한 역할을 한 네 번의 사건을 통해서 비교적 그에 대해 알 수 있다. 첫 번째로 그는 성녀 마르타(Saint Martha)와 마리아(Saint Maria)의 오빠인 성 라자로(Saint Lazarus)가 죽음에서 부활할 때 예수님과 함께 있었다.

However, we can relatively know about him through four incidents in which he played an important role. First, he was with Jesus when Saint Lazarus, the brother of Saint Martha and Saint Mary, rose from the dead. 

 

두 번째는 예수님께서 최후의 만찬 자리에서 하느님 아버지께 가는 길에 대해 말씀하실 때 그는 예수님께 다음과 같이 여쭈었다.

Second, when Jesus spoke about the way to God the Father at the Last Supper, he asked Jesus the following: 

 

“주님, 저희는 주님께서 어디로 가시는지 알지도 못하는데, 어떻게 그 길을 알 수 있겠습니까?”

“Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?” 

 

예수님께서는 그에게 다음과 같이 말하셨다. “나는 길이요 진리요 생명이다. 나를 통하지 않고서는 아무도 아버지께 갈 수 없다.”

Jesus said to him: “I am the way, the truth, and the life. “No one comes to the Father except through me.” 

 

세 번째는 가장 잘 알려진 사건으로 사도들이 부활하신 예수님을 뵈었다고 했을 때 그는 다음과 같이 말하였다.

The third and most well-known incident is when the apostles said they had seen the resurrected Jesus and he said the following: 

 

“나는 그분의 손에 있는 못 자국을 직접 보고 그 못 자국에 내 손가락을 넣어 보고 또 그분 옆구리에 내 손을 넣어 보지 않고는 결코 믿지 못하겠소.”

“Unless I see for myself the marks of the nails in His hands, and put my fingers into the prints of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will never believe.” 

 

여드레 뒤 그가 제자들과 함께 모여 있을 때 부활하신 주님께서 다시 나타나시어 그에게 말씀하셨다.

Eight days later, while he was gathered with his disciples, the resurrected Lord appeared again and spoke to him. 

 

“네 손가락을 여기 대 보고 내 손을 보아라. 네 손을 뻗어 내 옆구리에 넣어 보아라. 그리고 의심을 버리고 믿어라.”

“Put your finger here and look at my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. And stop doubting and believe.” 

 

그러자 그는 장엄하게 신앙을 고백했다. “저의 주님, 저의 하느님!”

Then he solemnly confessed his faith. “My Lord and my God!” 

 

예수님께서는 “너는 나를 보고서야 믿느냐? 보지 않고도 믿는 사람은 행복하다.”라고 말씀하셨다.

Jesus said, “Have you seen me before you believe? “Blessed is he who believes without seeing.” 

 

이후 그의 행적은 성경에는 나오지 않고 전승을 통해서만 전해지고 있다. 그는 예루살렘 사도 회의의 결정으로 인도로 갔고, 그곳에서 목수로 활동했다고 한다.

Since then, his actions are not mentioned in the Bible and are only passed down through tradition. He went to India by decision of the Jerusalem Apostolic Council, and is said to have worked as a carpenter there. 

 

그는 왕이 준 왕궁 건축 기금을 모두 불쌍한 이들에게 나눠준 뒤 하늘나라에 왕궁이 세워져 있다고 선포하여 감옥에 갇혔다.

He was imprisoned for proclaiming that a royal palace was being built in heaven after giving away all the palace construction funds given by the king to the poor. 

 

기적적으로 풀려난 그는 교회를 세우고 선교활동을 본격화해 많은 인도인에게 세례를 주고 그리스도교로 개종시켰다. 그러다가 힌두교 사제들에 의해 창에 찔려 순교했다고 한다.

After miraculously being released, he founded a church and began missionary work, baptizing many Indians and converting them to Christianity. It is said that he was martyred by being stabbed with a spear by Hindu priests.
