포르투갈의 성녀 엘리사벳(Saint Elizabeth of Portugal)은 에스파냐 아라곤의 왕의 딸로 태어났다.

Saint Elizabeth of Portugal was born as the daughter of the king of Aragon, Spain. 

 

그녀의 아버지는 자신의 딸이 가난하고 병든 이들을 위해 헌신한 헝가리의 성녀 엘리사벳(Saint Elizabeth)을 본받으라고 같은 이름을 지어주었다.

Her father gave his daughter the same name to emulate Saint Elizabeth, a Hungarian woman who devoted herself to the poor and sick. 

 

그녀는 12세의 어린 나이에 결혼하여 오랫동안 자녀를 낳지 못하다가 후에 아들과 딸을 얻었다.

She got married at the young age of 12 and was childless for a long time, but later had a son and a daughter. 

 

그녀의 남편은 능력 있는 강력한 통치자였지만 남편으로서는 칭찬받지 못할 사람이었다. 그녀는 남편의 불신앙을 감내하면서 자신이 낳지 않은 서자들의 교육까지 담당했다.

Her husband was a capable and powerful ruler, but he was not a worthy husband. She endured her husband's infidelity and even took responsibility for the education of the illegitimate children she did not give birth to. 

 

그러면서도 끊임없이 기도와 경건한 삶을 추구하며 자선 사업에도 힘써 병원 · 고아원 · 매춘 여성들의 보호소 · 양로원 등을 설립하고, 순례자와 가난한 이들을 위한 숙소도 마련해주었다.

However, he constantly pursued prayer and a pious life and also worked hard on charity projects, establishing hospitals, orphanages, shelters for prostitutes, and nursing homes, as well as providing lodgings for pilgrims and the poor. 

 

그녀는남편의 냉대에도 인내심을 갖고 대했고 이복형제들에게 관대한 아버지의 행동에 분개한 아들과 남편 사이의 대립을 중재하고 조정하는 데 중요한 역할을 했다.

She was patient in the face of her husband's cold treatment and played an important role in mediating and reconciling the conflict between her husband and her son, who was indignant at his father's lenient behavior toward his half-brothers. 

 

그녀는 남편이 병을 얻자 헌신적으로 간호해 주었다. 그녀의 정성에 감동한 남편은 뒤늦게 회심하고 신앙을 찾았지만, 이듬해에 선종하고 말았다.

She devotedly nursed her husband when he became ill. Her husband, moved by her sincerity, belatedly converted and found faith, but he died the following year. 

 

남편으로부터 많은 재산을 물려받은 그녀는 아들이 왕위를 승계한 후 수도원 · 교회 · 빈민 구제소 등을 세우는데 자신의 재산을 아낌없이 쏟아부었다.

She inherited a lot of wealth from her husband, and after her son succeeded to the throne, she generously poured her wealth into building monasteries, churches, and relief homes for the poor. 

 

이후 그녀는 수녀가 되겠다는 꿈을 포기했으나 작은 형제회의 3회원(Third Order of Saint Francis)이 되어 엄격한 보속의 생활과 봉사활동에 전념하며 그리스도의 사랑을 실천했다.

Afterwards, she gave up her dream of becoming a nun, but became a member of the Third Order of Saint Francis and practiced the love of Christ by living a life of strict penance and devoting herself to volunteer work. 

 

‘평화와 중재의 사도’로 알려진 그녀는 전쟁을 막아냈으며 또한 자신의 아들과 조카의 평화를 중재하러 가는 도중 과로와 열병으로 인해 병을 얻어 선종하였다.

Known as the ‘apostle of peace and mediation,’ she prevented war and died from overwork and fever on her way to mediate peace for her son and nephew.
