성 안토니오 마리아 즈카르야(Saint Anthony Maria Zaccaria)는 1502년 이탈리아에서 귀족의 외아들로 태어나 아버지를 일찍 여의고 어머니에게서 신앙 교육을 받으며 자랐다.

Saint Anthony Maria Zaccaria was born in Italy in 1502 as the only son of a nobleman, lost his father at an early age, and grew up receiving religious education from his mother. 

 

일찍이 정결을 지키겠다는 서약과 함께 자신에게 남겨진 유산을 포기할 정도로 어려서부터 신앙심이 깊고 청빈을 사랑했다.

From a young age, he was deeply religious and loved poverty, to the point where he renounced his legacy with a pledge to remain chaste. 

 

대학에서 의학을 공부하고 고향으로 돌아와 가난한 사람들을 돌보는 의사로 활동하던 중 자신의 소명이 영혼의 병자를 치료하는 데 있음을 깨달았다. 그래서 그는 신학을 배운 뒤 1528년에 사제 서품을 받았다.

After studying medicine in college and returning to his hometown to work as a doctor caring for the poor, he realized that his calling lay in treating the mentally ill. So, after learning theology, he was ordained a priest in 1528. 

 

1530년 그는 ‘영원한 지혜의 형제회(Oratory of Eternal Wisdom)’에 합류하였고 이후 그는 바르나바회(Barnabites)를 설립했다.

In 1530, he joined the ‘Oratory of Eternal Wisdom’ and later founded the Barnabites. 

 

이 수도회의 목적은 사제와 평신도를 쇄신시키는 것이었다. 또한 그는 여자 수도회인 ‘성 바오로의 천사 수녀회(Angelic Sisters of Saint Paul)’도 설립하였다.

The purpose of this order was to reform priests and laity. He also founded the ‘Angelic Sisters of Saint Paul’, a women’s religious order. 

 

한창 왕성한 활동을 하던 그는 1539년 7월 5일 29살의 젊은 나이로 선종했다.

At the height of his activity, he died at the young age of 29 on July 5, 1539.
