로마의 성녀 조아(Saint Zoe of Rome)는 로마 고위 관리의 아내로 그리스도인을 돕던 성 세바스티아노(Saint Sebastian)에 의해 개종하고 세례를 받았다.
Saint Zoe of Rome was the wife of a high-ranking Roman official and was converted and baptized by Saint Sebastian, who was helping Christians.
전승에 따르면 그녀는 오랫동안 말을 하지 못하는 병에 걸렸는데, 남편과 함께 감옥에 갔다가 성 세바스티아노(Saint Sebastian)가 그리스도인을 격려하며 신앙을 북돋을 때 그에게서 밝은 빛이 나와 감옥 전체를 비추는 것을 보았다.
According to tradition, she suffered from an illness that prevented her from speaking for a long time. When she went to prison with her husband, she saw Saint Sebastian as he was encouraging Christians and encouraging their faith, a bright light came from him and illuminated the entire prison.
성 세바스티아노(Saint Sebastian)가 그녀를 위해 하느님의 도우심을 구하는 기도를 바치고, 그녀의 입술에 십자 성호를 긋자 다시 말을 할 수 있게 되었다.
When Saint Sebastian prayed for her, asking for God's help, and made the sign of the cross on her lips, she was able to speak again.
이후 그녀는 기도하다가 붙잡혀 어두운 지하 감옥에 갇혔다.
Afterwards, she was caught while praying and imprisoned in a dark dungeon.
박해자들은 그녀의 머리카락을 이용해 나무에 매단 후 그 아래 불을 피워 열기와 연기에 질식해 숨을 거두도록 만들었다.
The persecutors used her hair to hang her on a tree and then lit a fire underneath it, causing her to suffocate from the heat and smoke.
