에스테르(Esther)의 의미는 ‘감추다’라는 뜻이다.

The meaning of Esther is ‘to hide.’ 

 

성녀 에스테르(Saint Esther)는 모습이 아름답고 용모가 어여쁜 처녀였다. 당시는 대제국을 다스리던 페르시아의 왕 크세르크세스의 통치 시대였다.

Saint Esther was a beautiful and beautiful girl. At that time, it was the reign of Xerxes, the king of Persia, who ruled a great empire. 

 

임금은 신하들을 위해 큰 잔치를 벌이는데 취흥이 돋자 자신의 왕비를 불렀다. 하지만 왕비는 임금의 분부를 거절하고 나오지 않았고, 이에 격분한 임금은 왕비를 폐위시켰다.

The king held a big feast for his subjects, and when he got drunk, he called his queen. However, the queen refused the king's orders and did not come out, and the king became enraged and dethroned the queen. 

 

새로운 왕비를 찾던 임금은 에스테르(Esther)를 사랑하게 되어 그녀를 자신의 왕비로 삼았다. 그러나 하만이 재상이 되면서부터 문제가 생겼다.

The king, who was looking for a new queen, fell in love with Esther and made her his queen. However, problems began when Haman became prime minister. 

 

하만은 왕국 전역에 있는 유다인들을 모두 몰살하기 위해 임금에게 거금을 약속하며 허락을 받아냈다.

Haman obtained permission from the king by promising a large sum of money to exterminate all the Jews throughout the kingdom. 

 

그래서 지정된 날에 유다인들을 모두 절멸시키고 그들의 재산을 몰수하라는 임금의 서신이 제국 내에 발송되었다.

So, on a designated day, a letter from the king was sent throughout the empire to exterminate all the Jews and confiscate their property. 

 

곳곳에서 유다인들이 단식하고, 울고 탄식하며 크게 통곡하고 있을 때 에스테르(Esther)는 하느님께 이렇게 기도한다. “당신 손으로 저희를 구하시고 주님, 당신밖에 없는 외로운 저를 도우소서.”

While Jews everywhere were fasting, crying, sighing, and wailing loudly, Esther prayed to God: “Save us with your hand and help me, who is lonely and have only you, Lord.” 

 

에스테르(Esther)는 임금에게도 같은 청을 올린다. “아, 임금님, 제가 임금님의 눈에 들고 또한 임금님도 좋으시다면, 제 목숨을 살려 주십시오. 이것이 저의 소청입니다. 아울러서 제 민족을 살려주십시오. 이것이 저의 소원입니다.”

Esther makes the same request to the king. “Oh, king, if I am pleasing to you and you are good to me, please spare my life. This is my request. Also, please save my people. “This is my wish.” 

 

에스테르(Esther)는 자신의 목숨을 걸고 임금 앞에 나아가 자신의 유다 민족을 지키는 데 성공하였다.

Esther risked her life to go before the king and succeed in protecting her Jewish people.
