사도 성 베드로(Saint Peter the Apostle)는 시몬(Simon)이라 불리며 호수에서 고기를 잡는 어부였다.

Saint Peter the Apostle was called Simon and was a fisherman who caught fish on a lake. 

 

그는 동생과 함께 고기를 잡다가 “나를 따라오너라. 내가 너희를 사람 낚는 어부가 되게 하겠다.”라는 예수님의 말씀에 그물을 버리고 바로 따라나섰다.

While he was fishing with his brother, he said, “Follow me. When Jesus said, “I will make you fishers of men,” they abandoned their nets and immediately followed him. 

 

그는 카나(Cana)의 혼인 잔치에서 베푼 예수 그리스도의 첫 번째 기적과 자신의 장모가 치유되는 장면을 목격하였다.

He witnessed the first miracle of Jesus Christ performed at the wedding feast at Cana and the healing of his mother-in-law. 

 

예수님께서 “그러면 너희는 나를 누구라고 하느냐?” 하는 물음에 베드로는 “스승님은 살아 계신 하느님의 아드님 그리스도이십니다.”라고 고백했다.

Jesus asked, “Then who do you say that I am?” Peter confessed, “Teacher, you are Christ, the Son of the living God.” 

 

이에 주님께서는 “나 또한 너에게 말한다. 너는 베드로이다. 내가 이 반석 위에 내 교회를 세울 터인즉, 저승의 세력도 그것을 이기지 못할 것이다.”라고 말씀하셨다.

The Lord said, “I also tell you. You are Peter. “Upon this rock I will build my church, and the powers of hell will not be able to overcome it.” 

 

그리고 “또 나는 너에게 하늘 나라의 열쇠를 주겠다. 그러니 네가 무엇이든지 땅에서 매면 하늘에서도 매일 것이고, 네가 무엇이든지 땅에서 풀면 하늘에서도 풀릴 것이다.”라고 말씀하셨다.

And “And I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. So whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” 

 

이 말씀으로 가톨릭교회는 사도 성 베드로(Saint Peter the Apostle)가 예수님께 수위권을 받은 첫 번째 교황이 되었다고 이해하고 있다.

With these words, the Catholic Church understands that Saint Peter the Apostle became the first pope to receive primacy from Jesus. 

 

부활하신 주님께서 승천하시기에 앞서 제자들에게 발현하셨을 때, 그는 “내 양들을 돌보아라.”라고 당부하시는 주님의 말씀을 들었다.

When the resurrected Lord appeared to his disciples before his ascension, he heard the Lord exhort them to “Take care of my sheep.” 

 

그래서 그는 그리스도께서 승천하신 후 신자들의 으뜸으로서 초대교회를 이끌며 배신자 유다(Judas)의 후계자를 임명했고, 이방인들에게 복음을 전한 첫 번째 사도이자 기적을 행한 첫 사도였다.

So, after Christ ascended to heaven, he led the early church as the leader of the believers, appointed the successor to the traitor Judas, and was the first apostle to preach the gospel to the Gentiles and the first apostle to perform miracles. 

 

그 후 그는 로마(Roma)로 가서 그곳의 초대 주교가 되었고, 네로 황제의 그리스도교 박해가 벌어진 64년경 바티칸 언덕에서 십자가에 거꾸로 매달려 순교하였다.

Afterwards, he went to Rome and became the first bishop there, and was martyred by hanging upside down on a cross on Vatican Hill around 64, when Emperor Nero's persecution of Christians took place.
