알폰소(Alphonsus)의 의미는 ‘고결하고 준비된’이란 뜻이다.

The meaning of Alphonsus is ‘noble and prepared.’ 

 

성 알폰소 마리아 데 리구오리(Saint Alphonsus Mary de Liguori)는 1696년 9월 27일 이탈리아에서 태어났다.

Saint Alphonsus Mary de Liguori was born in Italy on September 27, 1696. 

 

그의 집안은 유서 깊은 귀족 가문으로 신심 깊은 가정에서 성장하였다. 어린 시절부터 총명하였던 그는 불과 16세 나이로 나폴리 대학교에서 법학 박사학위를 받아 변호사가 되었다.

His family is a historic noble family, and he grew up in a deeply religious family. Intelligent from a young age, he received a doctorate in law from the University of Naples at the age of just 16 and became a lawyer.  

 

그 후 몇 년 동안 변호사로 일하면서 결코 패소하지 않는 변호사로 널리 알려졌다. 그러나 1723년 큰 돈이 걸린 소송이 벌어졌는데 이 소송에 참여했던 그는 어떤 중요한 문서를 잘못 해석하고 서명한 사실로 패소하였다.

After working as a lawyer for several years, he was widely known as a lawyer who never lost a case. However, in 1723, a large-scale lawsuit took place, and he lost the case because he misinterpreted and signed an important document. 

 

이 사건으로 그는 변호사로서의 자격이 상실되었다고 스스로 생각하였다. 새로운 진로를 모색하며 기도하던 중 1723년 8월 28일 불치병 환자들을 위한 병원을 찾아갔다가 신비체험을 하였다.

Because of this incident, he thought he had lost his qualifications as a lawyer. While praying and seeking a new career path, he visited a hospital for terminally ill patients on August 28, 1723 and had a mystical experience. 

 

그래서 그는 사제가 되기로 결심하고 오라토리오회(Oratorians)에 입회하여 1726년 12월 21일 사제 서품을 받았다.

So he decided to become a priest, joined the Oratorians, and was ordained a priest on December 21, 1726. 

 

그는 수녀들의 피정을 지도할 때 마리아 첼레스테(Maria Celeste) 수녀를 만났고 새로운 수도회에 대한 그녀의 환시를 확신하게 되었다.

While leading a retreat for nuns, he met Sister Maria Celeste and became convinced of her vision of a new religious order. 

 

그래서 그는 구속주회(Redemptorists)를 설립하였다. 이 수도회는 공동생활을 하면서 예수 그리스도를 본받고 주님의 말씀 전파를 주된 목적으로 하는 곳이다.

So he founded the Redemptorists. This monastery is a place where the main purpose of living together is to imitate Jesus Christ and spread the word of the Lord. 

 

또한 그는 가난하고 배우지 못한 사람들을 구제하는 자선활동을 전개하였고 이런 열정적 활동으로 중병을 얻었고, 또 죽을 때까지 괴롭혀온 류머티즘으로 마비될 때도 많았던 그는 1787년 8월 1일 선종하였다.

He also carried out charity work to help the poor and uneducated, and through these passionate activities, he became seriously ill and was often paralyzed by rheumatism, which plagued him until his death. He died on August 1, 1787.
