성녀 스페스(Saint Hope)는 하느님의 지혜를 뜻하는 소피아(Sophia)에서 나오는 세 가지 신학적 덕목으로 망덕(望德)이라고 한다.

Saint Hope is said to have three theological virtues called Hope, derived from the word Sophia, which means God's wisdom. 

 

망덕(望德)은 소망을 뜻한다.

Hope means wish.

 

세 명의 딸들의 순교에 관한 전설적 이야기에 따르면 이 세 가지 신학적 덕목은 실제 로마의 과부인 성녀 소피아(Saint Sophia)의 세 명의 딸들 이름이라고도 한다.

According to the legendary story about the martyrdom of the three daughters, these three theological virtues are actually the names of the three daughters of Saint Sophia, a Roman widow. 

 

성녀 스페스(Saint Hope)는 10살이었는데 용광로에 집어 넣어도 죽지 않자 결국 참수형에 처했다고 한다.

It is said that Saint Hope was 10 years old, and when she did not die even when thrown into a furnace, she was eventually beheaded. 

 

그리고 그녀의 어머니인 성녀 소피아(Saint Sophia)는 자신의 세 딸이 로마에서 순교한 후 딸들의 무덤에서 기도하다가 3일 뒤 평화롭게 선종했다고 한다.

Her mother, Saint Sophia, is said to have died peacefully three days later while praying at the tombs of her three daughters after they were martyred in Rome.
