클레르보의 성 베르나르도(Saint Bernard of Clairvaux)는 프랑스에서 태어났다. 그는 공부하면서 자신의 미래를 꿈꿨으나 1107년 어머니의 죽음으로 많은 충격을 받고서 수도생활을 추구하기에 이르렀다.

Saint Bernard of Clairvaux was born in France. He dreamed of his future while studying, but was so shocked by his mother's death in 1107 that he decided to pursue a monastic life. 

 

그는 베네딕토회 규칙의 엄격히 따르기 위하여 시토회에 들어갔다. 그는 클레르보(Clairvaux)라는 고립된 계곡에 수도원을 세우기 위해 파견되었다.

He joined the Cistercians to strictly follow the Benedictine rule. He was sent to establish a monastery in an isolated valley called Clairvaux. 

 

그 후 그는 수도원의 외부 일을 처리하게 되었는데 얼마 지나지 않아 그는 유럽의 가장 영향력 있는 사람들 중의 하나가 되어 통치자와 교황의 자문을 담당하기도 하였다.

He then took charge of the external affairs of the monastery, and soon he became one of the most influential men in Europe, serving as advisor to rulers and popes. 

 

이러한 여러 가지 활동과 심각한 건강 문제가 있었음에도 불구하고 그는 왕성한 저술가로도 유명하다.

Despite these activities and serious health problems, he was also famous as a prolific writer. 

 

그는 다양한 기질과 믿음을 가진 사람들로부터 칭송을 받았으며, '꿀처럼 단 박사'(Doctor Mellifluus)란 칭호를 얻었다.

He was praised by people of various temperaments and beliefs, and earned the title 'Doctor Mellifluus' (Doctor Sweet as Honey). 

 

1153년 8월 20일 그는 클레르보(Clairvaux)에서 선종하였다.

He died on August 20, 1153 in Clairvaux.
