교황 비오 10세(Pope Saint Pius X)는 1835년 6월 2일 이탈리아에서 태어났다. 그의 부모님은 가난했지만 자녀들을 신앙 안에서 키우려고 노력했다.
Pope Pius X was born in Italy on June 2, 1835. Although his parents were poor, they tried to raise their children in faith.
그는 11살 때 아버지에게 사제가 되고 싶다는 뜻을 말하자 아버지는 본당 신부의 도움으로 그를 학교에 보냈다.
When he was 11, he told his father that he wanted to become a priest, and with the help of his parish priest, his father sent him to school.
신학교 시절 그는 항상 1등을 놓치지 않았으며 열심히 기도하고 상냥하며 겸손한 학생이었다. 1858년 사제품을 받은 후 그는 가난한 청년들의 교육을 위해 본당에 학교를 세워 읽고 쓰기를 가르쳤다.
During his time in seminary, he always won first place, prayed hard, was kind, and was a humble student. After being ordained a priest in 1858, he established a school in the parish to educate poor young people, teaching them to read and write.
그는 1884년 9월 쇠락한 교구인 만토바(Nantova)의 주교로 임명되어 교구 활성화에 전념했다.
He was appointed bishop of Nantova, a declining diocese, in September 1884 and devoted himself to revitalizing the diocese.
1903년 7월 20일 레오 13세 교황이 선종한 뒤 콘클라베가 열렸다. 그는 콘클라베에 들어가기 전 “교황이 되느니 차라리 죽겠다”고 말하기도 했다.
A conclave was held on July 20, 1903, after the death of Pope Leo XIII. Before entering the conclave, he said, “I would rather die than become pope.”
콘클라베 시작 전 한 프랑스의 추기경이 그에게 프랑스어로 말을 붙이자 그는 라틴어로 프랑스어를 모른다고 답했는데, 그 추기경은 “프랑스어를 모르면 교황이 되긴 어렵겠다”고 말했다.
Before the conclave began, a French cardinal spoke to him in French, and he responded in Latin that he did not know French. The cardinal said, "It would be difficult to become Pope if you don't know French."
이에 그는 “하느님 감사합니다! 저는 교황이 될 욕심이 하나도 없습니다”라고 답했다고 전해진다. 그러나 그는 교황으로 선출되었다.
To this he said, “Thank God! He is said to have replied, “I have no desire to become Pope.” However, he was elected pope.
교황이 된 이후 특히 그는 매일 영성체할 것을 명하고, 첫영성체 연령을 낮추고, 병자들의 영성체를 완화해주는 교령을 발표했다.
After becoming Pope, he issued decrees ordering daily Holy Communion, lowering the age for first Communion, and easing access to Holy Communion for the sick.
그는 제1차 세계대전이 발발한 지 22일 후인 1914년 8월 20일, 전쟁으로 인해 수많은 사람들이 생명을 잃는 것을 개탄하면서 숨을 거두었다.
He died on August 20, 1914, 22 days after the outbreak of World War I, lamenting the loss of so many lives due to the war.
