성녀 마리아 미카엘라(Saint Maria Micaela)는 에스파냐의 마드리드에서 태어나 부모님 덕에 부족함 없는 어린 시절을 보냈다.
Saint Maria Micaela was born in Madrid, Spain, and had a prosperous childhood thanks to her parents.
그녀는 프랑스의 우르술라회(Ursulines)에서 교육을 받다가 13세 때에 아버지가 사망한 후 집으로 돌아와 어머니를 도우며 살았다.
She was educated at the Ursulines in France, but after her father died when she was 13, she returned home to help her mother.
그녀는 결혼하라는 모든 요구를 물리치고 오빠를 찾아가 몇 년을 함께 살았다.
She resisted all demands to marry him, went to visit her brother, and lived with him for several years.
그런데 그녀가 하는 일이 주로 연회에 참석하는 등 외적으로 화려한 일들이었기 때문에 그녀는 매일 영성체를 하고 또 고행복을 입고 지냄으로써 이 모든 세속적인 일들을 이기려고 노력하였다.
However, because her work was mainly externally flashy, such as attending banquets, she tried to overcome all these worldly things by receiving Holy Communion every day and wearing ascetic robes.
그리고 하루의 대부분을 버림받은 사람들, 병들고 가난한 사람들을 돌보는데 주력하였다. 어느 날 그녀는 생계를 위해 성매매하다 병에 걸린 10대 소녀를 스페인의 한 병원에서 만나게 되었다.
And most of the day was devoted to caring for the abandoned, the sick, and the poor. One day, she met a teenage girl at a hospital in Spain who had fallen ill while working as a prostitute for a living.
그녀는 이와 같은 처지에 있는 소녀들이 많다는 사실에 놀랐다. 그리하여 그녀는 거리의 소녀들과 가난한 이들을 돕기 위해 즉시 나섰다.
She was surprised to learn that there were many girls in this same situation. So she immediately set out to help street girls and the poor.
자신의 사회적 지위를 십분 활용해 귀족들에게 성금을 모아 거리 소녀를 위한 쉼터를 만들었다. 그녀는 거리 소녀와 성매매 여성들이 교육을 받고 독립할 수 있도록 헌신했다.
He took full advantage of his social status and raised donations from nobles to create a shelter for street girls. She dedicated her life to helping street girls and prostitutes gain education and independence.
그녀는 이를 위해서 성체와 애덕의 시녀회(Handmaids of the Blessed Sacrament)를 설립하였다.
For this purpose, she founded the Handmaids of the Blessed Sacrament.
그녀는 1865년 8월 24일 콜레라에 걸린 환자들을 돌보다가 그 병에 감염되어 세상을 떠났다.
She died of cholera on August 24, 1865, after contracting the disease while caring for patients suffering from cholera.
