성 요셉 데 갈라산즈(Saint Joseph Calasanz)는 에스파냐에서 태어나 철학과 법학 그리고 신학을 대학에서 공부하였다.

Saint Joseph Calasanz was born in Spain and studied philosophy, law, and theology at university. 

 

그런데 이 기간 중에 어머니와 형이 사망하자, 아버지는 그가 돌아와 결혼하여 가문을 이어가기를 바랐다. 그러나 그는 이러한 아버지의 뜻을 물리치고 1583년 12월 17일 사제 서품을 받았다.

However, when his mother and older brother died during this period, his father wanted him to return and marry to continue the family. However, he defied his father's will and was ordained a priest on December 17, 1583. 

 

그는 외딴 지역들에 대한 성직자들의 개혁과 신앙 재건을 위한 임무를 성공적으로 마치고 로마에서 콜론나(Colonna) 추기경을 만나게 되었다.

He successfully completed his mission to reform the clergy and rebuild the faith in remote areas and met Cardinal Colonna in Rome. 

 

이것이 계기가 되어서 그는 로마에서 교육과 자선 활동을 위한 공동체 설립을 시도하게 되었다.

This led him to attempt to establish a community for education and charity in Rome. 

 

그는 로마에서 일반 국민들의 무지와 윤리적 타락, 특히 부모가 죽은 뒤 버림받은 고아들을 보살피고 교육하는 일이 급선무임을 깨닫고 빈민가에서 유럽 최초의 무료 공립학교를 개설하였다.

In Rome, he realized that it was an urgent task to care for and educate the ignorance and ethical corruption of the general public, especially orphans who had been abandoned after the death of their parents, and opened Europe's first free public school in the slums. 

 

그는 1597년에 두 사제의 도움과 함께 ‘그리스도교 교리 형제회(Piarists)’의 책임자가 되었다.

In 1597, he became the head of the ‘Piarists’ with the help of two priests. 

 

“어린이들이 처음부터 신앙과 문학 교육을 받음으로써 자신의 삶이 행복함을 알게 된다.”고 기록한 그는 로마에서 1648년 8월 25일에 선종하였다.

“Children learn that their lives are happy when they receive religious and literary education from the beginning,” he wrote, and died on August 25, 1648 in Rome.
