성녀 루치아(Lucia)는 시칠리아(Sicilia)섬의 시라쿠사(Siracusa)에서 부유한 귀족 집안의 딸로 태어나 어려서부터 신심이 깊었던 부모의 영향을 받아 신심 깊은 아이로 성장했다고 알려져 있다.
It is known that Saint Lucia was born as the daughter of a wealthy aristocratic family
in Siracusa on the island of Sicily and grew up as a pious child influenced by pious parents
from a young age.
성녀 루치아는 어린 소녀일 때 스스로 하느님께 동정을 서원했으며 딸의 안정적인 결혼생활을 원했던 어머니조차 그 사실을 알지 못했다.
Saint Lucia made a vow of virginity to God herself when she was a little girl,
and even her mother, who wanted her daughter to have a stable marriage, did not know about it.
그러던 중 어머니가 불치병에 걸리자 성녀 루치아는 카타니아(Catania)에 있는 성녀 아가타(Agatha)의 무덤에서 치유의 기적이 일어난다는 말을 듣고 어머니를 모시고 가서 간절히 기도하였고 기도의 은총으로 어머니의 병이 치유되자 동정으로 살고 싶다고 말하며 어렵게 허락을 받았다

miracles of healing were taking place at the tomb of Saint Agatha in Catania.
She took her mother and prayed earnestly. Saying that she wanted to live as a virgin,
she received permission with difficulty
이미 약혼한 몸이었지만 루치아는 결혼 준비로 장만한 모든 재산을 가난한 사람들에게 나누어 주자고 어머니께 제안하자
lthough they were already engaged, Lucia suggested to her mother that all the property she had acquired in preparation for marriage should be distributed to the poor.
어머니는 자신이 죽고 난 후에는 재산을 나누어 주어도 좋지만 지금은 아닌 것 같구나.. 라고 말하자

성녀 루치아는 "주님을 기쁘게 하시려거든 그것을 우리가 필요로 할 때 베푸십시오"라고 간청했다.

그리하여 모녀는 재산을 팔아 과부, 고아, 방랑자, 가난한 이들과 수도자들에게 나누어 주었다고 한다.

orphans, wanderers, the poor and monks.
그 결과 그녀의 약혼자는 이 소식에 매우 분개하여 루치아가 그리스도인이라는 사실을 고발하였다.

눈알이 뽑히는 모진 고문까지 당한 그녀에게 재판관이 배교를 강요하자 그녀는 대답했다.
When the judge forced her to apostatize after undergoing severe torture
such as having her eyes pulled out, she responded.
“당신이 황제의 뜻을 따르기를 원하듯 나도 하느님의 뜻을 따르고 그분을 기쁘게 해드리는 것이 소원이예요”
"Just as you want to follow the Emperor's will, so I want to follow God's will and please Him."
재판관은 도저히 그녀를 설득할 수 없음을 깨닫고 매음굴로 보내라는 판결을 내렸다.
The judge, finding that he could not convince her, sentenced her to be sent to a brothel.
여러 남자와 소 떼까지 이용해서 성녀 루치아를 끌어내려 했지만 하느님의 도우심으로 그녀는 그 자리에서 꿈쩍도 하지 않자 화가 난 재판관은 성녀 루치아를 불에 태워 죽이려고 했으나 루치아는 그 뜨거운 불길 속에서 전혀 타지 않고 멀쩡히 서 있으며 살아있었다.

but with God's help, she did not budge from the spot.
The angry judge tried to burn Saint Lucia to death, but Lucia did not burn at all in the scorching
flames and stood still. and was alive
결국 긴 칼을 루치아 성녀의 입속에 찔러 넣어 죽였다고 한다.
In the end, it is said that he stabbed Saint Lucia with a long knife into her mouth and killed her.
천사의 도움으로 뽑힌 눈알을 돌려 받은 루치아 성녀는 어둠을 밝히는 동정 순교자로서 눈병과 시력이 약하거나 시력을 잃은 자들의 수호성인으로서 알려져 있으며 특별한 공경을 받고 있다.
Saint Lucia, who received her eyeballs back with the help of an angel, is a virgin martyr who
brightens the darkness and is known as the patron saint of eye diseases and those who have weak eyesight or who have lost their eyesight, and is specially revered.
