성 안토니우스(Saint Antonius the Great)는 251년 이집트 중부 코마나(Comana)의 부유한 그리스도교 가정에서 태어났다.
Saint Antonius the Great was born in 251 to a wealthy Christian family in Comana, central Egypt.
어려서부터 열심히 신앙생활을 했으며 20살 되던 해에 부모를 여의고 누이동생과 단둘이 남게 되었다.
He had been a faithful believer since he was young, and at the age of 20 he lost his parents and was left alone with his sister.
어느 날 성당에 갔다가 우연히 부자 청년에 관한 복음 말씀을 듣게 되었다.
One day I went to church and happened to hear the gospel message about the rich young man.
“네가 완전한 사람이 되려거든, 가서 너의 재산을 팔아 가난한 이들에게 주어라. 그러면 네가 하늘에서 보물을 차지하게 될 것이다. 그리고 와서 나를 따라라.”
"If you want to be perfect, go sell your possessions and give to the poor. Then you will have treasure in heaven. and come and follow me"
그 말씀을 듣고 하느님께 온전히 자신을 봉헌하기로 결심한 그는 상속받은 재산 중에서 누이동생을 위해 일부만 남겨두고 나머지는 모두 팔아 가난한 사람들에게 나누어준 뒤 은수자의 길을 걷기 시작했다.
Hearing these words, he decided to consecrate himself completely to God.
Of his inheritance, he left only a portion for his sister and sold the rest to give to the poor,
and began to walk the path of a hermit.
성 안토니우스는 철저한 금욕 생활을 위해 더 깊은 곳으로 들어가서 산기슭에 있는
빈 무덤 동굴에 거처를 마련하였다.
Saint Antonius the Great went deeper into the celibate life and made his home in an empty tomb cave at the foot of the mountain.
그곳에서 악마의 유혹과 싸우며 노동과 기도 그리고 성경 읽기에 전념하는 엄격한 수도 생활을 하였다.
There, he fought against the temptations of the devil and led a strict religious life dedicated to
work, prayer, and reading the Bible.
그 후 이집트 북부 사막 나일강 하류에 자리한 피스피르(Pispir) 산에서
텅 비어 있는 버려진 요새를 발견하고 그 입구를 막아
찾아오는 사람을 만나지 않고 홀로 머물며 약 20년 동안 금욕 생활을 하셨다.
He found an empty and abandoned fortress, blocked the entrance, did not meet anyone
who came, stayed alone, and lived an ascetic life for about 20 years.
고적한 생활 속에서 때때로 악마로부터 맹렬한 영적 · 육적 유혹을 받아 한동안 고생하셨지만
더욱 굳은 믿음과 의지와 기도로써 극복하셨다.
In a secluded life, sometimes fierce spiritual and physical temptations from the devil suffered for a while, but his faith grew stronger and He overcame it with will and prayer.
자연스럽게 성 안토니우스의 뛰어난 성덕과 수많은 기적에 관한 소문을 들은 사람들이 찾아와
제자가 되기를 원했다. 이로인해 많은 이에 의해 은수자 집단이 여러 곳에서 생겨났으며
그는 제자들에게 다음과 같이 말했다고 한다.
Naturally, people who had heard of Saint Antonius the Great's outstanding holiness and numerous miracles came to him and wanted to become his disciples.
Due to this, a group of hermits was created in many places by many people, and he said to his
disciples as follows.
“물이 마르면 물고기가 죽듯이, 수도자도 수도원에서 멀어져서 세속 사람들과 섞여 기도하기를 멀리하면 스스로를 잃게 된다. 물고기가 바다로 돌아가야 하듯이 우리는 우리들의 기도방이 있는 수도원으로 돌아와야 한다.”
"Just as a fish dies when the water dries up, so the monk loses himself when he moves away from the monastery and mingles with the world to pray. Just as fish must return to the sea, we must return to the monastery where our prayer room is located."
그러나 성 안토니우스는 독수자로서 더욱 충실한 삶을 살기 위해서 홍해 근처에 있는 콜짐이라는 높은 산으로 들어가 기도와 수덕 생활을 하셨다.
However, in order to live a more fulfilling life as a single person, Saint Antonius the Great went to
a high mountain called Koljim near the Red Sea to pray and lead an ascetic life.
356년 105세의 나이로 그곳에서 선종하셨으며 ‘사막의 교부’, ‘모든 수도자들의 원조’, ‘은수자들의 아버지’로서 불리우고 있습니다.
He died there in 356 at the age of 105. He is called ‘the father of the desert’,
‘the father of all monks’, and ‘the father of hermits’.
