성녀 아녜스는 4세기 로마에서 활동한 초기 그리스도교의 동정 순교자로 4대 순교 성녀 가운데 한 사람이며 이름 또한 '순결' 또는 '양'을 뜻한다.
Saint Agnes is an early Christian virgin martyr active in Rome in the 4th century and is one of the 4 great martyrs, and her name also means 'purity' or 'sheep'.
로마의 어느 부유한 가정 출신으로 뛰어난 미모를 지녔던 열세 살의 그녀는 평소 늘 순결한 생활을 생각하며 하느님께 동정을 바칠 결심을 했다.
A thirteen-year old girl of outstanding beauty from a wealthy Roman family
she always thought of a chaste life and decided to offer her virginity to God.
그녀의 미모가 매우 뛰어났던지 전국에서 그녀에게 청혼하는 자들이 많았고
Her beauty was so outstanding that many people proposed to her from all over the country.
중세의 대표적 성인전인 「황금전설」에 따르면 청년은 자신과 결혼하면 부자가 될 수 있고 금은보화도 실컷 갖게 해 주겠다며 소녀의 마음을 사로잡으려 했으나 돌아온 대답은 단호했다.
According to 「Golden Legend」, a typical adult story in the Middle Ages,
a young man tried to win the girl's heart by saying that if she married him
he would be rich and would have plenty of gold and silver treasures
but the answer that came back was firm.
“범죄의 원천이자 죽음의 목자인 악에서 멀어지시오! 내게는 이미 나를 두 팔에 품은 분이 계십니다.”
"Get away from evil, the source of crime and the shepherd of death! I already have someone who
has me in his arms."
로마 황제 디오클레티아누스의 그리스도교 박해 시기에 구혼에 실패한 청혼자 가운데 한 사람의 고발로 그녀가 그리스도인임이 발각되어 체포되었다.
During the persecution of Christians by the Roman emperor Diocletian she was discovered as a Christian and arrested on the accusation of one of her unsuccessful suitors.
불과 만 13세에 지나지 않았던 성녀 아녜스는 온갖 고문 기구를 늘어놓고 위협하는 총독의 심문에 직접 정면으로 맞섰다.
Saint Agnes, who was only 13 years old, stood face to face with the interrogation of the governor, who was threatening with all sorts of instruments of torture.
총독은 성녀 아녜스에게 이교도의 신에게 경배하지 않으면 매춘굴에 넘기겠다고 협박하자
The governor threatened Saint Agnes that she would be sent to a brothel
if she did not worship the pagan god.
성녀 아녜스는 “성호를 긋는 것 외에 절대로 그녀의 손을 움직이게 할 수 없으며 자신의 몸은 주님의 천사가 보호해 줄 것이니 털끝만큼도 더럽혀지지 않을 것이라고” 했다
Saint Agnes said, "I can never move her hands except to make the sign of the cross, and the angel of the Lord will protect my body
so it will not be soiled even by a hair."
이에 머리가 삭발당하고 매음굴로 보내진 성녀 아녜스를 위해서 하느님은 그녀의 머리카락을 길게 자라게 하여 온몸을 덮게 했으며 천사를 보내 하얀 옷을 입혀 주었다고 한다.
It is said that for Saint Agnes, who was shaved off and sent to a brothel, God made her hair grow long to cover her body and sent an angel to dress her in white.
이에 굴하지 않고 용기를 내어 아녜스를 덮치려던 젊은 남자는 즉사하고
Undeterred by this, the young man who summoned courage and tried to attack
Agnes died instantly.
아녜스를 욕정의 눈길로 처다보던 남자는 시력을 잃어버리게 되었다.
The man who looked at Agnes with a lustful gaze lost his sight.
이 일로 로마의 관리가 그녀를 심문했고 성녀 아녜스는 하느님이 보내신 천사가 지켜주었음을 증언하였고
A Roman official interrogated her about this and Saint Agnes testified that an angel sent by God had protected her.
관리에게 자신이 말이 옳았음을 보여주기 위해서 기도를 올려
죽은 젊은 남자와 장님이 된 사람의 눈을 낫게 하였다.
She prayed to show the official that she was right and healed the eyes of a dead young man and a blind man.
다시 총독 앞으로 끌려나간 성녀 아녜스는 불 속에 던져졌으나 불꽃이 양쪽으로 갈라져
조금도 다치지 않았으며 이에 결국 성녀 아녜스는 참수형을 받고 순교하였다.
Saint Agnes, who was brought back to the governor, was thrown into the fire
but the flames split both sides and she was not hurt at all.
In the end, Saint Agnes was beheaded and martyred.
