성 필립보 베니시오(Saint Philip Benitius)는 1233년 8월 15일 이탈리아의 한 귀족 가문에서 태어났다.

Saint Philip Benitius was born on August 15, 1233 into an Italian noble family. 

 

어려서부터 성모님을 공경하며 거룩한 생활을 실천하고자 마리아의 종 수도회(Order Of The Servites)에 들어가기를 열망했다.

From a young age, he aspired to join the Order of the Servants of Mary in order to honor the Virgin Mary and practice a holy life. 

 

하지만 그는 아버지의 뜻을 어길 수 없어 프랑스 파리(Paris)와 이탈리아 파도바(Padova)에서 의학을 공부하여 의학과 철학박사 학위를 받았다.

However, he could not go against his father's will, so he studied medicine in Paris, France and Padova, Italy and received a doctorate in medicine and philosophy. 

 

그러나 어려서부터 동경했던 수도 생활의 꿈을 접을 수 없었던 그는 1년 만에 의사 생활을 접고 마리아의 종 수도회(Order Of The Servites)에 입회했다.

However, unable to give up his dream of a monastic life that he had longed for since childhood, he gave up his career as a doctor after one year and joined the Order of the Servants of Mary. 

 

어린 시절부터 늘 사람들의 기대와 주목을 받던 그는 수도회에 입회하면서 새로운 삶을 살기 위해 자신의 신분과 학력을 속이기도 했다.

He always received people's expectations and attention from a young age, and when he joined a religious order, he lied about his status and educational background in order to start a new life. 

 

하지만 신학과 철학에 대한 이해와 사람의 마음을 움직이는 설교를 통해 그의 재능이 자연스럽게 드러났다. 그는 수도원에 들어간 지 4년만인 1259년 사제품을 받았고, 4년 뒤에는 수도원장이 되었다.

However, his talent was naturally revealed through his understanding of theology and philosophy and his sermons that touched people's hearts. He was ordained a priest in 1259, four years after entering the monastery, and became an abbot four years later. 

 

그는 선교사로서도 활약했는데, 고향인 이탈리아뿐 아니라 네덜란드와 독일 등에서 설교를 통해 많은 이들을 신앙으로 이끌었다.

He was also active as a missionary, leading many people to faith through his sermons not only in his hometown of Italy but also in the Netherlands and Germany. 

 

한 번은 길을 가던 중 한 나병환자가 구걸하자 아무것도 줄 것이 없어 자신이 걸치고 있던 망토를 주었는데, 그 망토를 걸친 나병환자의 병이 깨끗이 난 치유 기적이 일어나기도 했다.

One time, while he was walking down the street, a leper begged for something, and he had nothing to give him, so he gave him the cloak he was wearing, and a miracle of healing occurred where the leper who wore the cloak was completely cured of his disease. 

 

교황 클레멘스 4세가 선종한 후 그가 교황 후보자로 추천되었을 때 많은 이들이 그가 교황이 되기를 원했지만 그는 새 교황이 선출될 때까지 동굴에 숨어 지냈다.

When he was nominated as a candidate for the Pope after the death of Pope Clement IV, many wanted him to become Pope, but he hid in a cave until a new Pope was elected. 

 

그는 자신을 늘 하느님 앞에 나약한 죄인으로 여기며 매 순간 회개의 기도를 게을리하지 않았다. 1285년 8월 22일 그는 기도 중에 선종하였다.

He always considered himself a weak sinner before God and did not neglect to pray for repentance at every moment. On August 22, 1285, he died while praying.
