로마의 성 제네시오는 전설적인 기독교 성인으로, 한때 그리스도교를 조롱하는 연극에 출연한 희극 배우였습니다.
Saint Genesius of Rome was a legendary Christian saint who was once a comic actor in a play ridiculing Christianity.
전설에 따르면 어느 날 로마에 있는 디오클레티아누스 황제의 궁중 무대에서 그리스도교의 성사(聖事)를 조롱하기 위한 연극이 황제 앞에서 공연되었다.
According to legend, one day on the stage at the court of Emperor Diocletian in Rome, a play was performed before the emperor to ridicule the sacraments of Christianity.
이때 전문 희극배우인 성 제네시오가 세례성사를 받으려고 준비하는 예비신자로 출연하게 되었다.
At this time, Saint Genesius of Rome, a professional comedian, appeared as a catechumen preparing to receive the Sacrament of Baptism.
공연 도중 그는 성령의 영감을 받아 갑자기 그리스도교로 개종하겠다는 생각이 불같이 타올라 실제로 세례성사를 받았다.
During the performance, he was inspired by the Holy Spirit and suddenly had the idea of converting to Christianity and actually received the sacrament of baptism.
그가 이 사실을 황제에게 선언하자 화가 난 황제의 명령으로 그는 즉시 체포되어 집정관에게 넘겨졌다.
When he declared this to the emperor, he was immediately arrested and handed over to the consul by order of the angry emperor.
그는 집정관 앞에서 참혹하게 매를 맞고, 고문대에 올라 오랫동안 쇠갈퀴를 이용해 살점이 떨어져 나가는 고문과 불붙은 나무토막으로 지지대는 고통을 겪어야 했다.
He was savagely beaten in front of the consul, climbed on the torture rack, and had to suffer for a long time using an iron pitchfork to rip off his flesh, and the support to be burned with a piece of wood.
그런데도 성 제네시오는 그리스도에 대한 믿음을 굳건히 유지하며 이렇게 외쳤다.
Nevertheless, Saint Genesius of Rome held fast to his faith in Christ and exclaimed:
“그리스도 외에 다른 임금은 없다. 당신이 나를 수천 번 죽인다 해도 나의 입술과 마음에서 그리스도를 앗아갈 수는 없다.”
“There is no king other than Christ. Even if you kill me a thousand times, you cannot take Christ from my lips and from my heart.”
성 제네시오는 결국 참수형을 받고 순교하였다.
Saint Genesius of Rome was eventually beheaded and martyred.
