성녀 제노베바 토레스 모랄레스(Saint Genoveva Torres Morales)는 1870년 1월 3일 에스파냐에서 막내로 태어났다.

Saint Genoveva Torres Morales was born in Spain on January 3, 1870 as the youngest child.

 

그녀는 8살 때 부모님이 돌아가시고 하나 남은 오빠 호세(Jose)와 함께 고아와도 같은 처지가 되어 가사를 돌봐야 했다.

Her parents passed away when she was 8 years old, and she became an orphan and had to take care of the household along with her only remaining brother, Jose.

 

그녀는 어려서부터 가족의 정과 친구 관계가 거의 없었던 그녀는 홀로 지내는 것이 익숙했다. 열 살 때 그녀는 영적 독서에 특별한 흥미를 갖게 되었다.

She had little family or friends from a young age and was used to being alone. At the age of ten she developed a special interest in spiritual reading.

 

그녀는 이를 통해서 진정한 행복은 하느님의 뜻을 행하는 것에 있으며 그것이 우리가 창조된 이유라는 것을 깨닫게 되었다.

Through this, she realized that true happiness lies in doing God's will and that this is why we were created. 

 

열세 살 떄 그녀는 점점 번지는 괴저병을 멈추게 하기 위해 왼쪽 다리를 절단해야만 했다. 일생 동안 그녀의 다리는 많은 고통과 병을 초래했고 그녀는 계속 목발에 의지할 수 밖에 없었다.

When she was thirteen, her left leg had to be amputated to stop the growing gangrene. Throughout her life, her leg caused her much pain and illness, and she was forced to continue to rely on crutches. 

 

그녀는 1885년부터 1894년까지 9년 동안 카르멜회(Carmelites)에서 운영하는 곳에서 수녀님과 다른 아이들과 함께 살았다. 

For nine years, from 1885 to 1894, she lived with a nun and other children in a place run by the Carmelites. 

 

그곳에 머무는 동안 하느님께서는 그녀에게 영적 자유라는 선물을 주셨는데 이는 그녀가 일생을 통해 실천하고자 하는 일에 최선을 다하도록 하는 힘이었다.

While there, God gave her the gift of spiritual freedom, which gave her the strength to do her best in what she wanted to do throughout her life.

 

그녀는 카르멜회(Carmelites)에 입회해 수도생활을 하기 원했지만 신체적인 조건 때문에 받아들여지지 않았다.

She wanted to join the Carmelites and live a monastic life, but was not accepted because of her physical condition.

 

그래서 1894년 그녀는 카르멜회(Carmelites)에서 운영하는 곳에서 떠나 두 여성과 함께 고독과 가난을 함께 나누며 살았다.

So in 1894, she left a place run by the Carmelites and lived with two other women, sharing loneliness and poverty.

 

1911년 카논 바르바로스(Canon Barbarros) 신부는 그녀에게 새로운 수도회를 시작할 것을 제의했다. 그녀는 주변의 도움으로 첫 번째 수도 공동체가 발렌시아(Valencia)에서 설립되었다.

In 1911, Father Canon Barbarros suggested that she start a new religious order. With the help of those around her, the first monastic community was founded in Valencia. 

 

곧이어 그녀가 설립한 예수 성심과 거룩한 천사 수녀회(the Congregation of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Holy Angels)에 영성생활을 하고자 하는 다른 여성들이 들어왔다.

Soon after, other women who wanted to pursue a spiritual life joined the Congregation of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Holy Angels, which she founded. 

 

그녀는 개인적인 내면의 고독과 주님과 함께 홀로 머무는 생활을 소망했지만 하느님의 뜻에 의해 그녀의 소망은 받아들여지지 않았다.

She desired personal inner solitude and a life alone with the Lord, but her wish was not granted by the will of God. 

 

일생 동안 육체적 고통 속에서도 하느님의 자비하심에 감사하며 용기를 잃지 않았던 그녀는 1956년 1월 5일 사라고사(Zaragoza)에서 선종하였다.

She was grateful for God's mercy and did not lose courage despite physical pain throughout her life. She died in Zaragoza on January 5, 1956.

“성녀 헤노베바 토레스는 사랑에 목말라하고 위로받고 싶어 하는 외로운 사람들에게 하느님의 부드럽고 따스한 사랑을 펼치는 도구였습니다. 그리고 그들의 육신과 정신을 돌보아주는 하느님의 도구로서 충실하게 살았습니다. 그녀의 영성에서 특별하게 드러나는 큰 특징은 인간의 죄에 대해 속죄하기 위한 성체 안에 계신 예수님에 대한 흠숭이었습니다. 그리고 이러한 깊은 신심은 겸손과 단순함 그리고 자기 부정과 사랑으로 충만한 사도직의 기초를 이루었습니다.”
