성 제를락(Saint Gerlach)은 원래 방탕한 군인이자 도적이었지만 아내의 죽음 이후 경건한 기독교인이 되었다. 그리고 그는 로마와 예루살렘으로 순례를 떠났다.

Saint Gerlach was originally a debauched soldier and thief, but after his wife's death he became a devout Christian. Then he went on a pilgrimage to Rome and Jerusalem.

 

로마에서 그는 7년 동안 아픈 자들을 간호했으며 젊었을 떄의 죄에 대해 참회하였다.

In Rome, he nursed the sick for seven years and repented for the sins of his youth.

 

그 후 그는 고향땅인 네덜란드로 돌아와서 모든 재산을 가난한 이들에게 나누어 준 뒤에 발켄부르크 교외에서 은수자가 되었다.

Afterwards, he returned to his native Netherlands, gave away all his possessions to the poor, and became a hermit in the outskirts of Valkenburg.

 

그는 재를 섞은 빵을 먹었고 미사를 보기 위해서 매일 도보로 순례하였다.

He ate bread mixed with ashes and made daily pilgrimages on foot to attend mass.

 

전설에 따르면 그가 충분한 참회를 했을 때 그의 죄가 용서되었다는 표시로 지역 우물의 물이 세 번 포도주로 변했다고 한다.

Legend has it that when he had done enough penance, the water in a local well turned into wine three times as a sign that his sins were forgiven.

 

그는 얼마 지나지 않아 50세가 채 안 되는 나이에 선종하였다.

He died shortly afterwards, at the age of less than 50.
