세체의 성 가롤로(Saint Charles of Sezze)는 이탈리아 세체에서 가난한 농부의 부모에게서 태어났다.

Saint Charles of Sezze was born in Sezze, Italy, to poor farmer parents. 

 

그의 어머니는 그가 유아였을 때 아시시의 프란치스코(Francis of Assisi)와 파도바의 안토니우스(Anthony of Padua)를 기리 위해 끈과 후드가 달린 옷을 그에게 입히는 것을 좋아했다.

When he was an infant, his mother liked to dress him in robes with straps and hoods in honor of Francis of Assisi and Anthony of Padua. 

 

그의 외할머니는 그에게 독실한 마음을 가르쳐주었다. 그는 부모님을 돕기 위해 농장에서 양치기로 일했다. 그는 1630년 개인적으로 순결 서약을 했다.

His maternal grandmother taught him to be pious. He worked as a shepherd on the farm to help his parents. He took a personal vow of chastity in 1630. 

 

1633년에는 병으로 인해서 죽을 정도로 아파서 병이 낫게 된다면 작은 형제회(the Order of Friars Minor)에 가입하겠다고 하느님께 기도하였다.

In 1633, he was so sick that he could die, and prayed to God that if he would be cured, he would join the Order of Friars Minor. 

 

하지만 그의 부모님은 그가 비록 가난해서 많은 교육을 받은 것은 아니었지만 신부가 되는 것을 원했다. 결국 그는 1635년 작은 형제회(the Order of Friars Minor)에 입회했다.

However, his parents wanted him to become a priest, even though he was poor and did not receive much education. He eventually entered the Order of Friars Minor in 1635. 

 

그는 수도자의 삶을 살았으며 부모의 반대에도 불구하고 사제 서품을 받지 않았다. 그는 수도원에서 요리, 문지기, 성물 관리인, 정원사로 일했다. 또한 그는 거지로서 거리로 나갔다.

He lived the life of a monk and was not ordained a priest despite his parents' opposition. He worked at the monastery as a cook, porter, keeper of relics, and gardener. He also went out into the streets as a beggar. 

 

1648년 10월 그는 교회의 미사에 참석했는데 높은 성체서 나오는 빛줄기가 그의 옆구리를 꿰뚫고 신비로운 상처가 남았다.

In October 1648, he attended mass at the church, and a beam of light from the high Eucharist pierced his side, leaving a mysterious wound. 

 

그는 신부는 아니었지만 고해신부는 그에게 자신의 삶에 대한 이야기를 쓰라는 지시를 받았다. 그 책은 "하느님 자비의 위대함(The Grandeurs of the Mercies of God)"이었다.

Although he was not a priest, his confessor instructed him to write the story of his life. The book was “The Grandeurs of the Mercies of God.” 

 

심지어 그는 교황 인노첸시오 10세와 알렉산더 7세도 그에게 조언을 구했다. 1656년에 발생한 흑사병 유행 때에는 영웅적으로 주민들을 도왔던 그는 1670년 1월 6일 선종하였다.

Even Popes Innocent X and Alexander VII sought his advice. He heroically helped the people during the Black Death epidemic that occurred in 1656, and died on January 6, 1670.
