성 마우로(Saint Maurus)는 로마 귀족의 아들로 태어났다. 그에 관해서는 거의 알려지지 않았지만 선량하고 순종하는 모범적인 수도자였다고 한다. 

Saint Maurus was born as the son of a Roman nobleman. Little is known about him, but he is said to have been an exemplary monk who was good and obedient. 

 

그는 12살쯤 되었을 때 교육을 받기 위해 수비아코(Subiaco)로 가서 성 베네딕투스(Saint Benedictus)의 돌봄을 받게 되었다.

When he was about 12 years old, he went to Subiaco to receive his education and came under the care of Saint Benedictus. 

 

그는 비록 어린 나이에 수도원에 들어왔으나 신심과 학덕이 뛰어나 스승의 보조자가 될 만큼 훌륭한 인물로 성장했다.

Although he entered the monastery at a young age, he grew into a man of great piety and academic virtue, enough to become an assistant to his teacher. 

 

교황 성 그레고리오 1세는 그를 칭송하며 수도원에서 있었던 그의 특별한 일화를 전해주고 있다. 

Pope St. Gregory I praises him and tells a special story about his time at the monastery. 

 

성 베네딕투스(Saint Benedictus)가 그의 방에서 영적인 환시를 통해 성 플라키두스(Saint Placidus)가 호수에 빠진 것을 보고 그에게 그를 구하라고 명했다.

Saint Benedictus had a spiritual vision in his room where he saw Saint Placidus drowning in a lake and commanded him to save him. 

 

그는 스승의 명을 받고 물결에 휩쓸려 가는 성 플라키두스(Saint Placidus)를 구하기 위해 달려갔고 물 위를 달려 그를 구해내었다.

He received his teacher's orders and ran to save Saint Placidus, who was being swept away by the waves, and ran on the water to save him. 

 

그는 이 기적이 스승의 기도와 축복 덕분이라고 했고 성 베네딕투스(Saint Benedictus)는 그의 순명에서 비롯한 기적이라고 했다.

He attributed this miracle to his teacher's prayers and blessings, and Saint Benedictus said it was a miracle that originated from his obedience. 

 

이 기적으로 그는 동료 수도승들에게 존경받는 대상이 되었다. 529년경 성 베네딕투스(Saint Benedictus)가 새로운 수도원을 설립하기 위해 몬테카시노(Monte Cassino)에 갔을 때 스승을 계승해 수비아코 수도원의 수도원장이 되었다.

This miracle made him revered by his fellow monks. Around 529, when Saint Benedictus went to Monte Cassino to found a new monastery, he succeeded his teacher as abbot of Subiaco Monastery. 

 

그는 수도원장으로서 형제들을 기도와 고행의 생활로 이끌었고 많은 기적을 행했다고 한다. 그 후 그는 수도원장을 사임하고 은수생활을 하다가 2년 뒤에 병으로 선종하였다.

As an abbot, he led his brothers into a life of prayer and asceticism and is said to have performed many miracles. Afterwards, he resigned as abbot and lived as a hermit, dying of illness two years later.
