[천주교 세례명] “나뭇잎 배의 기적” 성녀 이아(Saint Ia)

중세 후기의 전설에 의하면 성녀 이아(Saint Ia)는 아일랜드 사람이다.

According to late medieval legend, Saint Ia was Irish. 

 

그녀는 선교를 위해 성 핀가르(Saint Fingar)와 성녀 피알라(Saint Piala) 그리고 많은 수의 동료들과 함께 영국 남서부 콘월에 도착하여 헤일(Hayle) 강어귀에 정착하였다.

She arrived in Cornwall, southwestern England, and settled at the mouth of the Hayle Estuary with Saint Fingar, Saint Piala, and a large number of companions for missionary work. 

 

그녀가 바다를 건너 콘월에 도착하게 된 전설적인 내용에 따르면 그녀가 동료들과 함께 가려고 출항 지점에 당도해보니 그들은 이미 출항한 후였다.

According to the legend of her crossing the sea and arriving in Cornwall, when she arrived at the departure point to go with her companions, they had already set sail. 

 

슬픔에 빠진 그녀는 하느님께 애원하며 도움을 간구하고는 물 위에 떠다니는 나뭇잎 하나를 잡으려고 하였다. 그런데 그 잎이 점점 커져서 그녀를 능히 태울 수 있게끔 되었다고 한다.

In her sorrow, she prayed to God for help and tried to catch a leaf floating on the water. However, it is said that the leaf grew larger and was able to burn her. 

 

그래서 그녀는 하느님의 도우심에 감사드리며 그분께 더욱 굳은 신뢰심을 드리면서 기도하던 중 다른 일행이 당도한 해안에 무사히 상륙할 수 있었다고 한다.

So, it is said that while she was praying, thanking God for His help and giving Him even stronger trust, she was able to safely land on the shore where the other party arrived. 

 

아무튼 무사히 도착한 그녀는 그곳에 작은 은둔소를 짓고 여생을 고행과 기도 속에서 지냈다.

Anyway, she arrived safely, built a small hermitage there, and spent the rest of her life in penance and prayer. 

 

그런데 이 전설은 또한 순교한 콘월의 순교자들과 연결되었다. 그래서 콘월 지방에서는 그녀를 순교자로서 공경하고 있다.

However, this legend was also connected to the martyrs of Cornwall. So in Cornwall, she is revered as a martyr.
