성 라바노 마우로(Saint Rabanus Maurus)는 귀족 출신 부모의 아들로 태어났다.
Saint Rabanus Maurus was born as the son of noble parents.
그의 부모는 그를 어린 시절부터 베네딕토회 수도원에 맡겨 교육받도록 했다. 그는 수도원 학교에서 종교와 다양한 학문을 배우며 수도사가 되었다.
His parents sent him to a Benedictine monastery from an early age to be educated. He studied religion and various studies at a monastery school and became a monk.
그는 성 마르티누스(Saint Martinus) 수도원 학교로 가서 성경과 전례, 교회법 등을 공부했다. 그는 803년에 수도원으로 돌아와 수도원 학교의 교사가 되었다.
He went to the monastery school of Saint Martinus and studied the Bible, liturgy, and church law. He returned to the monastery in 803 and became a teacher at the monastery school.
이후 그는 학교 교장으로 재직하면서 다양한 주제의 글을 쓰고 많은 후학을 양성하였다.
Afterwards, he served as a school principal, writing on a variety of topics and nurturing many younger students.
그가 지었다고 알려진 대표적인 찬미가 중에는 성령 강림 대축일에 부르는 “오소서 성령님(Veni Creator Spiritus)”도 있다.
Among the representative hymns he is known to have composed is “Veni Creator Spiritus,” which is sung on the Feast of Pentecost.
그는 학문과 기도에 더 정진하기 위해 842년 수도원장을 사임하고 인근 수도원으로 들어가기까지 20년 동안 수도원 학교를 유럽 그리스도교 문화의 중심지가 되도록 다양한 학문 연구와 도서 출판에 힘썼다.
He resigned as abbot in 842 to devote himself more to study and prayer and moved to a nearby monastery. For 20 years, he worked hard to make the monastery school a center of European Christian culture, conducting various academic research and publishing books.
그는 많은 성당과 수도원을 건설했을 뿐 아니라 600명이 넘는 수도승들과 함께 고전과 교부 시대의 중요한 사본들을 모아 도서관을 가득 채웠다.
Not only did he build many cathedrals and monasteries, but with over 600 monks, he amassed a library full of important manuscripts from the classical and patristic periods.
일생을 학자이자 수도원장, 대주교로서 헌신한 그는 856년 2월 4일 선종했다.
He devoted his life as a scholar, abbot, and archbishop, and died on February 4, 856.
